When Bastian Richter isn't writing, he's devotedly renovating a 250-year-old bakery with creaky wooden floors, historic brick walls and an original wood-burning oven in the Dutch province of Friesland, in the very north of the country, where the North Sea lashes against the dikes of the Wadden Sea in harsh winters and where the thermometer rarely rises above the 25-degree mark even in summer. The old house stands on the edge of a small village, right next to a busy canal and a bascule bridge that really lives up to every cliché image of the region. Born in the eastern German province, he found a new home and task here after studying in Marburg in northern Hesse, long years in Berlin and a brief detour to the Swiss mountain canton of Glarus. Since 2017, he has now written nine books and novels in his writing chamber with a direct view of the drawbridge in front of his house, always interrupted by the many skippers who pass under the bridge that is open for them after a loud ringing. And that, of course, only when he is not one of the skippers himself, cruising the Frisian canals and lakes in his good-natured 1968 rust cruiser, where the view always reaches to the horizon for lack of mountains and wind, weather and clouds project a different atmospheric image on the sky every single minute of the day - from the fog-shrouded sunrise in the morning to the deep red dramatic sunset in the evening. His path to this point was anything but preordained: Born and raised in Leipzig behind the Iron Curtain, he was only supposed to be part of the future scientific elite of the already declining GDR. But his gaze turned towards the West at an early stage and he seized the first opportunity to start a new life there. During his studies, he was more concerned with founding companies and writing his first articles and short stories than with textbooks, exams and examinations. The former was to dominate his life for the next few years after completing his studies. On his not always straight and sometimes even a little confused path through life, from student turned web designer, long years as head of an IT company in Berlin and overseas, a detour into the world of rock 'n' roll and as CEO of a wellness chain, he always kept one thing in mind: His deep love for Italy, the country where he has now spent a combined total of more than two years. It was also there, in 2007, that a sprightly pensioner appeared to him with her two girlfriends, from whom, over time, he formed the amateur investigator Mafalda Cinquetti from the Venetian lagoon island of Murano. www.bastianrichter.com
