I am a linguist, primatologist, publisher and writer, not necessarily in that order. I am also the mother of two teenagers, one a human who is attending college and the other a chimpanzee who is still at home. All these facts about me are related, and it's almost impossible to speak of linguistics, or primatology or parenting or writing and not mention facts from one of the other areas of my life.

As a writer of novels, I believe in the integrated plot-line. As a person who lives and breathes, I exemplify it.

If I had a motto, it might be this: "We're closer together than ever suspected, for all things on earth are interconnected." (From the lyrics of my song, "We All Share the Same World", which is part of the musical "The Debt Collector", written with composer Daniel Carter.)
