Dan "Axe" DeKruif is not your average author or average anything for that matter. He is a very unique combination of extreme behavior and experiences, hence he titled his first book, "Bouncing off Guardrails," which refers to bouncing from one extreme behavior in life to another. He began writing it one week before open heart surgery at age 34 as he reflected on his roller coaster life up to that point. The book was written as a diary, so the resulting book is very blunt, yet it genuinely documents the physical and philosophical transition throughout his surgery, recovery, and learned improvements over the next year of life.
As his life moved from focus on survival to success, the much more polished second book, "No Limits - No Regrets," followed his preparation and adventures of the Texas Mile motorcycle race, building and riding his final custom chopper to Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach, and shattering the record for fastest motorcycle ride across America on his newest sport bike. That book led him to writing and recording an original soundtrack and the release of the true life, high octane documentary by the same name, which available digitally on Amazon.
The same year that he broke the record, he lost the source of warmth and light in his life to cancer. After losing Sunshine, his girlfriend during both books, he was left alone with their dog, Baron, in the dark, empty house. Writing was his only outlet and chance for peace, so he spent that holiday season typing every horrible memory of his life, reaching back to a time before his second birthday. After the dark half, he started back at the beginning of his history with every positive memory of his life and tied the two together with an Afterword that focused on positive perspective in life. That third book, "Sunshine Among The Clouds," explored the brightest and darkest corners of a most unique life and in honor of Sunshine's memory, it provides a message of appreciation for every day, experience, and smile that we are able to enjoy.
