Anica Mrose Rissi grew up on an island off the coast of Maine, where she read a lot of books and loved a lot of pets. She now tells and collects stories, makes up songs on her violin, and eats cheese with her friends in central New Jersey. Her books include the ANNA, BANANA chapter book series; the picture books WATCH OUT FOR WOLF!, THE TEACHER'S PET, and LOVE, SOPHIA ON THE MOON (winner of the 2021 Paterson Prize and the 2021 Maine Literary Award, and an Amazon Editors' Pick for Best Kids' Books of the Month); the middle grade books HIDE AND DON'T SEEK: AND OTHER VERY SCARY STORIES and WISHING SEASON (a Horn Book Fanfare Best Book of 2023; a CCBC Choices 2024 best-of-the-year list selection; a 2024 Bank Street Best Children's Books of the Year pick, noted for outstanding merit; and winner of the 2024 Paterson Prize); and the YA novels GIRL REFLECTED IN KNIFE, ALWAYS FOREVER MAYBE, and NOBODY KNOWS BUT YOU (a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection). Her essays have been published by The Writer magazine and the New York Times, and she writes lyrics for and plays fiddle in the band Owen Lake and the Tragic Loves. Anica tweets about bookish things and her dog, Sweet Potato, at @anicarissi, which is also her handle on Instagram. Anica loves talking with kids and adults about all stages of the writing process, from ideas and drafting to revisions and beyond. She is available for in-person and online writing workshops and presentations for groups of all sizes and ages. Photo by Kim Indresano.
