Andy Johnson had no idea she would ever be a published author, let alone one who wrote popular self-improvement books. Until she was 30 years old, Andy had struggled with overeating, and at the age of 29, she weighed her heaviest at almost 250 pounds. “I was very unhappy. I had no social life at all,” Johnson recalls, “I worked as a dispatcher for the local police department, so I was around eligible men all the time, but they just looked right past me.” Her weight wasn’t only causing her emotional pain, but physical pain as well. “I wasn’t sleeping well, because I had sleep apnea. My knees and ankles hurt. At my annual physical that year, the doctor told me that both those problems would be solved if I would lose some weight,” she recounts, “Then he added, ‘You won’t live a very long life if your weight continues to increase.’ I remember leaving his office thinking that if I didn’t change, my unhappy life, was going to be a short one. That was the first day that I exercised.” Johnson walked one time around her block and remembers panting with exertion when she finished. She also found a overeating support group, and began attending meetings. She continued to walk every evening. Three months after that doctor’s appointment, Johnson had lost 25 pounds. “It felt so good to lose the weight, but it also felt good to eat right and exercise,” Johnson says, “I felt like I had stumbled upon a secret, that diet and exercise felt good! I shared it with everyone who asked me how I was losing the weight.” Another 3 months later, Johnson’s weight was below 200 pounds for the first time in her adult life, and she had begun jogging. She was sponsoring newcomers in her overeating support group. One day, while shopping on Amazon for low-carb noodles, she saw an item explaining Amazon’s self-publishing process. “I got the idea that I could write down everything I had learned, and release e-books,” Johnson says, “I thought about how much easier it would have been for me if someone had written down what they had done as a guide for me. I could write guides for someone else!” Johnson first e-book was Walking for Weight Loss. As she learned other skills in her meetings about making friends and handling stress, Johnson wrote How to Stop Worrying and Start Living Now and How to Make Friends. Andy Johnson lives in Nevada with her husband of three years, who is a race director. They are expecting their first child.
