5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful and beautiful tale

Every so often you find a story that it wonderful, heart warming, and just something special, and that would be this one. Told entirely from Ellie's perspective, it's the story of when she meets Mia, and everything that follows. Of the friendship that develops, of the trails that they go through, and the realising of what they want. Of the other people in their life, and the impact that they have, and the self discovery that occurs along the way. It is just so beautifully told, drawing you in, making you feel for them, and hoping that everything will work out. For any sapphic romance fan, this is a must read.

Ellie Beckett is single mindedly working on her thesis and minding her business sitting in a corner at a bar till Mia Sharpe steps in and then proceeds to change her life forever.

This was such a sweet and beautiful story. I absolutely loved Ellie’s character, she’s neurodivergent and being in her headspace can be overwhelming but the emotions she feels are absolutely relatable. I thought the journey of self discovery and coming out was well done and fair warning it is quite angsty but as usual Cass does pinning and longing so so well. I loved Ellie’s crew of supporting characters, Gianna was particularly my favorite. The banter between all the characters is funny and keeps the narrative at a fast clip.

This is a novella which is a part of the I heart sapphic series, and that’s probably why I felt this ended a little sooner than I would have liked. The chemistry between the two MCs is great but I wish we could have gotten more of their time together as a couple, but again it’s a novella so brevity is unavoidable. As always Cass creates a wonderful world and I enjoyed it.

Haley Cass never misses. Like ever. She knows how to write a dang good story and I’ve fallen in love with every book she’s written.

You want a slow burn, clueless friends-to-lovers story between a science nerd and a firefighter? And a story about discovering yourself and sexuality? Well Down to a Science is the book for you.

The story is told from Ellie’s POV, a biomedical engineering researcher at MIT, and we meet her sitting at her favorite pub. During one of her many nights sitting at the pub working on her PhD, Ellie meets Mia, our other MC, who is a hot firefighter. Ellie is awkward and has a hard time reading people, while Mia is more relaxed, though she has her baggage. As the story unfolds, Ellie, who always thought she was straight, realizes she’s starting to fall for Mia. It’s a painful beautiful journey we take with Ellie and Mia that is worth any frustration.

My only complaint with Down to a Science was the ending. While we got our HEA (happy ever after), I do believe it was a bit rushed and wish it was a tad bit longer. This book is full of angst and miscommunication that make you want to throw the book across the room, but don’t do that because the ending is still worth it. Seriously, you should already be reading it and not this review. Go buy it now!

5/5 stars!

Coming out is different for everyone. Sometimes you know early on, sometimes it takes a little longer. But the important thing is that you own it. Life can be confusing, life can be hard but the only thing you can do is accept yourself and figure out how to be happy.
Mia and Ellie have a super strong friendship that they both value greatly. Making the choice to be more is difficult and scary. But if you don't take that step, who knows what you might be missing out on?
Once again Haley Cass does a wonderful job of telling a story with extremely likable characters, in fact someone you would love t have in your own life. Good story with an HEA.What more could you ask for??

4.0 out of 5 stars great story!

I can almost never say it too much, but i love a well written (and well edited) Lesbian story. Through the years I’ve read so many bad ones - some good stories but horribly edited; others just not well developed stories. So, I really like when an author can but together a good story, well defined characters, depth and a nice writing style.

My only complaint would be that perhaps the timeline went on but too long (and was confusing as to how long it had been). There was a little more angst and missed opportunities than i would have liked, but these two eventually find a way to be together.

I was moved by, “Down to a Science, Haley Cass’s story of the relationship that develops between Ellie, a biomedical engineer pursuing her Ph.D. at MIT, and Mia, a firefighter in training transferred from L.A. to Cambridge. Both women have past family issues that stymie their openness. Also, when they meet, Ellie still considers herself straight, and Mia is recovering from a breakup with her girlfriend whom she had imagined marrying. Cass effectively develops the two key characters to be relatable and lovable and adds supporting characters who are more than just sidekicks. This is a novel I’d reread; I was affected by each woman’s individual struggles and by how they navigated the emotional obstacles they encountered together.

4.0 out of 5 stars I would read anything written by Haley Cass

I think Haley Cass is one of the best writers out there mastering the skill of torturing one of their characters. Just when I thought it could be over, something else happened. Poor, poor Ellie. She had my heart from the beginning. I would have loved to have a journey in her mind and navigate all the nerdiness inside. Couldn't that be any hotter? It also made her character so funny to read, because, it's just her, always searching for a scientific reason behind it all... and coming up with the most interesting thoughts ever during even a simple chat. I had to think sometimes of The Big Bang Theory and it made me giggle so, so much. Great neurodivergent character!

Mia got me mad in some parts, but then I felt so protective of her. I'm glad she managed to break through her fears and open up to Ellie. And Ellie questioning her on what were her needs. "How can I help", "What do you want me to do"... so sweet.

I loved the whole from friends to lovers and the analogies with finding the right moment in time, finding the perfect universe to be in... Multi-universe theory! Fringe! One of the best shows ever!
I also got a bit of a vibe with Supergirl, reminding me of Alex and Maggie subplot.

What did I love the most?

The love declaration, of course. I think Haley Cass is one of the best writers in this topic. Who wouldn't like to hear those words? I almost melted. So intense, so beautiful. The top of the angst.

On another note, I feel like the whole book took its time till more than 80% and then it started speeding up so fast that I missed a conclusion regarding some characters. Or a conclusion I wish or hoped for. Could this be a chance for another book? I loved Gianna and Riley!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sibling goals. Friend group goals. Relationship Goals.

Where to start with this gem of a book?

A shorter tale than usual for Cass, but absolutely worth it.

I’ll start with the siblings. They remind me so much of my nephews. One is autistic and the other not. They just GET each other and have always had a dynamic just like Riley and Ellie. I’m getting this book to the autistic one cos he said to me recently: it’s really hard for me.

And he sure as F deserves all the things. So thank you for this representation.

The friendship group is everything that Pride hangs should be. Gorgeous and honest friendships and celebrating true selves. It is the most precious thing and Cass nails it. I love my friendship group from when I was coming out they’re chosen family and I love them. You will see this woven throughout and it’s a joy to have captured pride like this.

And the love story. Well. Two very different people sometimes find each other and just decode in ways that are meant to be. This is that love story. Deep love and different ways of processing and the bravery it takes to take a risk and to follow your heart even if it is hard.

Scientifically GOOD.

Loooooooovely. But quite angsty IMHO, but don't get me wrong, it was just like those sore muscles you get from exercising after a sedentary phase, a bit painful, but delicious when you squeeze them, only the story has the plus of a happy ending, which isn't the case with exercises sometimes haha. And I'm saying this as a person who tries to avoid angsty stories at all costs.

Both MC and LI – and if I'm being honest all side characters – were great, the plot like I said, delicious, fun and sweet. Ellie was sooooo dense, good lorrrd! and Mia in denial. Useless lesbians at its finest. Imma be honest (I say this almost every review) I would love a follow up, especially because I was invested in Gianna and the sis, could something flourish from it?

Anyway, great read
