This was a fun sapphic retelling of the movie Coyote Ugly. The movie was fun and entertaining, but this story was better. The character development was pretty good and consistent. There weren't any ridiculous misunderstandings that led to disaster, but there was enough tension and conflict to keep the relationships dynamic and kept you hooked, wanting to know what would happen next. You couldn't help but love all of the characters. And the community described was fantastic and made me jealous that I've never experienced a place like that. I need a HOWL bar! Great story and great ending. Would love a sequel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome story with a flaw and some errors

I have to say up front that I have no idea what Coyote Ugly is, so can't compare this book to it, as other reviewers have done. I loved this book. The characters have magical chemistry together, and I also loved the supporting characters. I did wonder how a certain amount of money came about, and how it related to the amount needed. The writing is good, but not error-free. I was hoping for fewer errors, but the plot and characters are so good I could just about excuse them all. The characters and plot are quirky and funny and charming.

Possible spoiler (don't read further if that would bother you):

But there is a big plot hole the size of a car. What happened there? Why was it introduced right away to draw us in but never resolved? Even if the resolution was just to say the situation would never be resolved, that was absolutely necessary but missing. I hope this isn't a spoiler!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, fluffy, and cute adaptation of Coyote Ugly.

Think of the last lesbian bar in town, about to close down. Think cute, clueless, naive, and idealistic MC. Think rough around the edges, heart of gold, cynic, sexy AF bar owner. There, I mapped it out for you. We all know what’s gonna happen. Oh, and I forgot to mention everything happens during Pride month and the bar boasts some traditional events in that month.
This is a Lucy Bexley book, meaning it’s fun and witty and has some quirky characters like a grandmother who can bake pot cookies, a best friend who’s an incorrigible flirt, and turkeys, lots of them roaming the streets of Boston. Because yes, the turkeys are important too :) Hey, it’s a Lucy Bexley book, I can’t help it if those are the rules.

As a long-time fan of Coyote Ugly, I urge you to read this book because it is so much fun! As an avid reader, all I can say is that you should definitely get that book because it’s fun and intelligent and it has warmth and heart and laughter and acceptance and Bexley just punches all the right keys to my heart in this one.
I wish it was longer and more complex but we can’t have it all, can we?
Also, because it’s a shorter story, it moves quickly and things happen fast. Sometimes we need that too. Slow burn is nice but we’ve got to fit the whole story in Pride month so it has to happen fast.

T&T
Tropes: Age gap, opposites attract, sunshine and grumpy, one night into forever, one bed, workplace romance.
Triggers: Estranged family (off page), turkeys (naaaa, just kidding, this barely has triggers).

5.0 out of 5 stars HOWL And The World Howls With You

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this novella but a story of healing and saving a dream weren’t what I expected. I loved Lou finding the courage to let Clementine into her heart while Clementine focused so hard on saving Lou’s dream to be just different enough to help keep me reading. The writing was excellent and all of the characters were believable and relatable to me. I’ll be keeping my eye on Lucy Bexley going forward. This was a fun read.

Clementine has her sights set on being unshackled from responsibilities that kept her in Maine and experiencing all sorts of new things in big city Boston. Unfortunately her start to that adventure isn’t going the way she wanted and now desperate for a job she lands up at Howl - the last lesbian bar in Boston and meets Lou the very hot but enigmatic owner. 👀

I had such fun reading this. I mean it’s a classic Bexley story — quirky characters abound, Lou’s grandma was just the cutest, you cant help but adore the MCs, there are some classic dad jokes and puns pop up little gophers managing to pull a snort from you and make others around you frown 🥰.

But along with the funny, there’s a really nice mix of emotional vulnerability and growth story arc which I really liked.

This was a low angst romance and a lovely easy weekend read. Also that cover is pretty awesome and my favorite from the I heart sapphic pride collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious & easy read to warm your heart!

Come find your pack and “Howl” at the purple moon with Lou, Clem and Lucy Bexley. This wonderful sapphic reimaging of “Coyote Ugly” has so many troupes, it fills my lesbian heart with joy. Opposites attract, sunshine/grumpy, workplace romance, one night to forever, all these troupes come together to create a beautiful, fast paced, hilarious story guaranteed to warm your heart.

This is the first book from Lucy Bexley I’ve read, but it most certainly won’t be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this delightful story. It was witty, well-paced and all the characters were entertaining. The story follows “the wicked witch of the North-East”, bar owner, Lou, and bubbly, idealistic Clem. Sparks fly immediately between the women, but after a quickie in the supply closet of “Howl, Boston’s last surviving Sapphic bar”, their lives are never the same again. Both women have a very different outlooks on life, but their dynamic and chemistry is off the charts. You can’t help but love them both and root for them and their budding romance.

Lucy has created a cast of realistic, likeable, and entertaining characters. The characters in this book are at the centre of the story and drive the action forward. Every character adds something extra special to the overall story, even the bar feels like another character. However, the leading ladies own their spotlight perfectly. I wish there had been more backstory for Clem and Lou, but for such a short novel, I still got a great sense of their individual personalities. I also have to mention Alyssa and Sam, I loved them so much and I want a full novel of their love. Bexley’s descriptive imagery was brilliant, not only do you get vivid image of the world and the action taking place, but it was also done in a very poetic manner, which I loved. I feel like some moments were slightly rushed, but it didn’t make me lose any of the important details or the humour. I wish Howl was real because I want a one way ticket to that slice of queer heaven.

Abby Craden once again knocks the narration out of the park. She portrayed the humour, the characters, and the overall story brilliantly. So, if you’re looking for a light-hearted, cute, quick and easy read, with moments that will have you laughing out loud, this book is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Schräge Bar, erfrischende Charaktere

4.0 out of 5 stars Feel good, low angst, fun vibes

Who else had the urge to re-watch Coyote Ugly after reading Howl?

Lucy Bexley's re-imagining of this classic early 2000's movie is brilliant. Her ability to inject so much humour into a topic which could be angsty and depressing allows the reader to laugh with the characters as opposed to feeling pity for them.

Lou owns Howl, a sapphic bar which she is on the verge of loosing. Her family consists of an adorable grandma, and her employees. She survives on one-night stands and keeping her problems to herself. Clem leaves her small town and her father to find her own way after feeling out of place in her own life. Her new room mate doesn't give her a moment to wallow in her own misery so she ends up at Howl, and in Lou's sights. Together they ignore the mutual attraction which is building between them, and while Clem breaks down the protective walls Lou has built around herself, she convinces her to accept help from their community to save the bar so many have called home over the years.

Howl is that book you need when your after a feel good, low angst, fun vibes story.
