Capt. Maddox continues to live his best life. He's got a wife he loves and a daughter he adores. So why can't he relax and reap the benefits of his past deeds saving the universe and humanity over the course of 17 novels? Because he's Capt. Maddox. And because author Vaughn Heppner still has ideas. "The Lost Relic" delves into the beyond, so far from earth as to make the crew of the alien starship Victory nervous and alone when they tackle the latest adventure. The mysterious Mastermind appears to have rigged the events that led Starwatch to send him on the mission to recover what is thought to be invaluable alien technology. Of course, Maddox is hardly the only one after the tech. Mastermind sent his own crew after the device, which may or may not be on a planet that's guarded against any approach from space by a massive dampening device. Heppner gives the novel his usual setup. The mission is near impossible. Only the Di-Far, Maddox, has the audacity to track down the elusive super computer/relic. Like usual, he and his crew face certain death on many occasions. But somehow, like Kirk and Spock, he uses his wits and the skills of those around him to get out of trouble. This novel has a bit of a dark side. Maddox must face his fears, and some of his crew must deal with the trauma of their experiences. On top of that, Heppner again reveals his impressions of the dangers of artificial intelligence, even if it is 11,000 years old.
As you might have guessed from my review title... I love this series! I won't spoil your own read, so let's keep this to why I enjoyed the read.
Our protagonist is larger than life. He is a superior version of humanity to begin with. Over a series of amazing adventures, he accumulated a useful variety of superhuman attributes that made him into a more formidable hero. As the very fate of humankind often rests upon his capable shoulders, his superhuman skills are often necessary to prevail over some creature that would otherwise put an end to us all.
I enjoy that Mr. Heppner balances the Captain's superhuman abilities with very human traits - love of his wife and daughter, selfless service for the sake of the human race and others, and insights into his emotions. We ride along during his inner monologs. We feel his personal turmoil and watch our hero do what he must, no matter the risk to himself.
I also enjoy that this character is a believer in both God and the power of prayer. He is surrounded by science but recognizes a power greater than all.
In summary, I strongly recommend this book and the previous 16 that came before it.
This was an excellent book in the series. Maddox and improved embark on a distant Journey. On this mission they find an extraordinary system. There are many Mysteries in obstacles to overcome. And yet another change and Evil entity to overcome. I greatly enjoyed this book and I'm eager to read the next.
Help her has Maddox on a dangerous mission 6,000 light years from. The Mastermind has plans to retrieve a relic that has plans of its own. Will Maddox & the Victory survive? Will they ever get home? Will the Methuselah Man quit being such a jerk?
Idk if it was just the last part of the story or a larger trend throughout but The Lost Relic seems to have a different flavor to it that felt a little like a refresh on things. I’m not going to overanalyze but the focus seemed broader overall but deeper on each of the set of characters as we switched viewpoints. I’ve said it before - I hope Mr. Heppner makes a buttload of money then spends it all frivolously so he has to keep writing. Bravo!
It seemed a bit strained and simular to past episodes. Still it is an engaging story and I will await the next book. There is a lot going on in this universe. Many avenues to explore based on the threads opened in this book. Looking forward to the next. Meta needs an outlet and the professer needs Dane back and Gaylyn needs closure with his people
Another great entry in this long running series. We learn about a war waged by the Builders many thousands of years back and discover that the remains of their opponent is still around and seeking a way out. Not as much intrigue and factional scuffles in this entry as it's more discovery and planet. Maddox's family is starting to show the strain as many families do when the father is away on a long deployment. Good to see that the high admiral is considering Maddox's future as he can't keep going back to the well and at some point Maddox will be out of commission or retired and Starwatch will need trained people. Time for the secondary characters to get a chance to shine in a future book?
