Demon's Throne 2 is an excellent sequel. It continues the excellent world-building of the first book while also setting up more of a larger plot. The central premise of the story remains strong and the ending sets up what looks to be a very interesting third book.

3.0 out of 5 stars New Story Same Issues….

TLDR: Not as good as Heretic, but with all the problems of the Heretic series.

1: Despite the hero supposedly being a master of magic, we get nothing but the same spells abilities. Fire in its most basic form of balls and walls. Teleportation, only outside combat. And a great spell of that takes over a minute to use and cripples the hero. Nothing else. No smithing. No Evocation. No new element. No new ways to even use magic. He hits people with his axe more than he ever casts. Its boring and shows a complete lack of planning or plotting. Why even call him a spell caster if your not going to put in the work to develop it? This is a constant problem for this author where he doesn’t plot out his hero’s power set. He keeps them the same through all the books despite saying they are training. Its boring. And if a fault that makes me want to give up on this author as its a constant. There should be elopement in power, new spells, new elements, new areas, and if you introduce an area of power at least flesh it out and continue with hit. Both smithing and evocation were introduced and not a thing has been done on them.

2: We are told the character is overpowered, but in every fight he has to be saved. Fighting two mages, he is saved by his general. Even when he gets to cast his big spell the mages get away after fighting him to a standstill. Then in the climactic battle, it takes all of his party to even equal one mage. Really? So much for a strong hero. If you are going to make this about the power of friendship, then say it. If this is supposed to be an powerful hero, then have him win on his own merits.

I was disappointed in the above and they were big threads of disappointment that wove through the book. These are common issue with this author. He makes the hero seem strong, and then fails to show it. He promises powers and fails to develop them. He says the hero is training, and shows not an inch of progress. How about he wins a fight win his own? How about he forges his own weapons? How about he actually does smoothing beside throwing a fireball as a spell?

Wow. That was a fantastic book. This is the first series that I've read from this author. Usually I grade the first book of any series rather gently giving that Beginnings in general can be shaky. With this serious at the first book out the gate was pretty freaking amazing. The reason might be alluded to in the afterword. That being said moving on to this book the second installment the story has only gotten better. I was a little worried about the last chapter but the very last scene absolutely did not disappoint. My only regret is now I have to wait for book 3. Really I recommend these books. To the author well done and keep up the good work.

Closer to 3.5 stars. The fact that most of the side characters want to jump in the sack immediately with almost no work seems... silly. The editing error is a loss of a star.
That being said it's still a decent story, with a lot of moving parts. The MC you never feel he's in danger, but there are others that you might worry will come to harm.
Smut is... honestly at risk of becoming stale, but it's sprinkled in and doesn't detract from the story so that's nice.
I'll definitely read the next book though, hopefully it improves

I can imagine many veteran readers, like myself, would look down on this genre.. the harem genre. Most especially, many would think, as I once did, that other than titillation the genre could absolutely hold no other merit.

This writer and this series is just one example of how wrong I was!

I have, over the past 3-4 years, read quite a few authors and series in the genre. I will say at the outset the genre is not for children or the squeamish. However, that IS NOT to say writers who pursue the genre are without talent. I very much think of the genre as romances for (grown) men. Entertainment is their purpose, and entertaining they are!

Another good book from this author. Intrigue, fighting, sex. All good things and they mostly seem to be in moderation. Character growth isn't where I'd like it but otherwise ok. Right now it's just too....much. Juggling the MC delving the Labyrinth, expanding his kingdom, all the people....I have notes and spreadsheets to help keep track.

Wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars. I think the story got bogged down a little with all the politics. It kind of felt like I was reading a bit too much of the same content regarding the various factions. Otherwise it was a fun book.

I personally prefer Robertson's Heretic Spellblade series over this,
I prefer Nathan to Rys.
I also like the main story line too.

That being said, i am still going to buy and read this series because the writing and world building is fantastic and the greatly detailed fight scenes still make sit at the edge of my chair by how enjoyable they are read.

like reading a fantasy version of Bernard cornwell battle scenes.

and the humour always make me chuckle,
and so far all K. D. Robertson books are better written, thought out and characters are better than some other writters in this genre.

would easily recommend.

I seem to be on a K D Robertson bender, after finishing the current Heretic Spellbalde series I landed on Demons Throne. Well what can i say, finished the two books in two days and am super happy with them. This second book only got better. More focus on the politics and geopolitical power struggle and the characters are awesome. Minor Spoiler: The only thing i personally really don’t like is the pregnancy fetish, they kinda creep me out but I guess that’s a preference.
