If you’re in the mood for creepy fun in the library, don't hesitate to dig into Laura Sims’s new novel HOW CAN I HELP YOU. On Thursday, 8/17/23, mystery/thriller author Harlan Coben praised Sims's book on the Today Show. He called HCIHY "delicious" and said it was "a gripping and dark psychological thriller about two librarians that takes place in a library... What more do we book-lovers need to know?"
I agree!
Margo (formerly a murderous nurse known as Jane) is successfully hiding in plain sight, working as a circulation clerk in the Carlyle Library. Margo, friendly, reliable, and efficient, charms colleagues and library visitors alike—when she isn’t quietly threatening patrons who annoy her.
Margo’s sense of safety begins to evaporate when Patricia (Pa-tree-see-ah), a recent library school graduate and wannabe writer, is hired as the Carlyle's new research librarian. Patricia is fascinated by Margo, but she starts to notice cracks in Margo’s carefully constructed façade.
While Margo’s and Patricia’s behavior is unsettling, especially as the tension ramps up, there are moments when you aren’t quite sure where your sympathies lie—with Margo, with Patricia, or as far away from both of them as you can get. As I said: creepy fun.
Sims’s polished, atmospheric writing, and her insider’s knowledge of the workings of a public library, make HOW CAN I HELP YOU enjoyable to read and easy to recommend.
