Thanks Inkyard Press and NetGalley for the eARC, these opinions are my own. I love reading Robby Weber’s books they always put me in the feel goods! Zack Martin is one of the best players on his soccer team and likely to become next year’s captain especially with the outgoing captain Ryan’s approval. When Ryan does something stupid Zack takes the blame so Ryan’s chances for the future don’t end. With everyone thinking Zack did the stupid thing he’s worried he’ll lose his chance at captain. Then he meets Chip and starts to find interest in something other than soccer. Can he maintain the respect of the team? Can he make something happen with Chip when Chip doesn’t know everything? When will Ryan tell everyone the truth? I loved the ups and downs of life and love in the book! You’ll find your self wanting to root for Zack but also wanting to talk some sense into him at the same time! Robby always writes such dynamic characters and I find myself always wanting to know more about all of them! Also this book features the return of one of my favorite characters from If You Change Your Mind! I Like Me Better is sweet, charming, and adorable! I highly recommend if you like rom coms or contemporary romance! Can’t wait to read it again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute MLM YA Summer Beach Read!
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2023
Zack is a rising senior at his highschool and expected to be the next soccer captain. He takes the fall for the previous captain's prank in hopes that it will make him look more like a team player. Zack is forced to do community service, where he meets Chip and falls for him instantly. Zack deals with these feelings for Chip, tough relationships between his parents, fights with his long-time best friends, and trying to hold the soccer team together, all while navigating what he really wants for his future.

I really enjoyed I Like Me Better! It was packed with references to books, games, movies, and Taylor Swift that I found hilarious. It was a perfect queer beach read that had some adorable banter between Zack and Chip. I love this setting of sea-side Citrus Harbor and their Marine Institute. It was such a colorful place and I'd love to get a spinoff with Zack's friends finding love. A lot of mistakes were made by Zack and while it's frustrating to read at times, that's not only typical of the genre but of teenagers. The read was overall happy and cute and I am so glad I got the opportunity to read it.

I received a free advanced reader's copy from Netgalley and Inkyard Press and am voluntarily reviewing it with my honest opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Summer Romance
Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2023
I Like Me Better by Robby Weber combines soccer and ocean conservation in a sweet summer romance. The main character discovers a lot about himself throughout the book, and I enjoyed the discussions about marine life and the environment. This is a great read for those looking for a beach read with the enemies to lovers trope.

When soccer star Zack takes the blame for a prank his captain orchestrated, he finds himself stuck with community service for the summer. However, when he meets a cute boy at the beach and negotiates his way into volunteering with the marine institute, where the boy from the beach turns out to be the head intern, Zack’s summer starts looking up, minus the fact that Chip resents him for the prank. As Zack and Chip get closer but Zack’s reputation looms, Zack must sort out his priorities and decide what kind of future he wants for himself.

To be honest, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Zack. While I appreciate that him taking the blame was what he thought was best for the soccer team, I struggled with the lying aspect. Zack does learn a lot throughout the book, and his changing relationship with soccer makes him relatable, but I had a hard time rooting for him as I was reading.

One of my favourite aspects of this book is the marine conservation theme. While the prank Zack took credit for involves a dead shark, a significant part of the book involves passing an ordinance to help marine life, and the marine institute setting is a great backdrop promoting ocean education. This is such an interesting element that adds an extra layer of meaning to the story.

I Like Me Better by Robby Weber is a sweet summer romance about finding yourself. While I struggled to root for the main character, I enjoyed the setting and the marine conservation elements throughout the book. Those looking for something beachy that touches on timely topics will not want to miss this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute read!
Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2023
This was such a quick and cute read! It was refreshing to read a YA novel where the characters actually seemed to act their age instead of like an adult with a teenage label. I love the character development that Zack went through and how the summer before his senior year changed him. Despite getting mad at him for the mistakes he was making even near the end of the book, it was all very realistic to how a teenager would act and the choices that they would make.

There was a lot of pop culture sprinkled throughout the book that added another layer of realism. I feel like a lot books I read tend to avoid that, but this book wasn't afraid to embrace it and acknowledge how the world actually is.

I really enjoyed the friendships between the main characters. Groups of three are hard to keep and there's lots of jealousy involved which could be seen between Zack and Meyers and Beckett and I really like the way it was handled here. All of the characters were really cute and I enjoyed how supportive they were for each other!
