This was a fun book that kept me guessing the whole time who the murderer was. The first 3/4 of the book was super slow and I didn’t really get into it until the end. Overall for a murder mystery it was super light, if you like a murder mystery that’s not scary at all this book is for you.
A strong weekend recommend! Twists, turns, and all sorts of secrets! A group of college friends reunite at an Avignon chateau for a twenty-year reunion and birthday celebration . . . the dream vacation turns deadly and you're left guessing until the end who the true killer is. My only beef is that now I want to go to The Fresh Market or Whole Foods and act like I'm a French chick.

Friends, Fear, Food, France. Jaclyn Goldis has created page-turner of a thriller. Four friends aren’t sure why Seraphine Demargelasse has summoned them all to her chateau in Provence. But they could never have imaged what happened next. The story involves so many rich threads – the art world, the influencer culture, family secrets and the ways in which even the best friendships evolve over time and space. The Chateau offers all the ingredients for a great book group discussion – just add wine!
Hard to pick what I like best about this book: the addictive web of secrets, the creative use of historical tidbits, or the DELICIOUS setting. I predict this book is going to blow up in 2023. Jaclyn Goldis is definitely one to watch.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Spice level: 0/3 Genres: mystery / thriller Tropes: suspense, locked room mystery, absence of evidence, everyone is a suspect
Darcy and her three best friends take a trip to France to visit her grandmother at her Chateau. They had all visited many times twenty years prior (when they were all on a study abroad in college) but have not returned altogether in a while. Darcy’s grandmother invited them all personally for a fun girls trip, but they start to realize she had other motives for inviting them.
After Darcy’s grandmother is found brutally murdered one night, the women start to point fingers at each other. Although they claim to be best friends, it becomes clear that they have all been keeping things from each other. Even Darcy’s grandmother has been keeping things from her. Everyone turns out to have a potential motive for the murder, and accusations begin flowing.
This book was written as multi-POV between the women and other people at the Chateau.

Wow, I did not see that ending coming! I love mysteries with unexpected twists. I really enjoyed the writing style of this book as well. The women all had very different personalities, and the author was able to make their POVs feel different and unique. The way they were written, as well, really made you begin to feel attached to them
The beginning involved laying out the backgrounds of the four friends, and revealing some of the things they are struggling with (including issues with the other women). This was definitely necessary for the story, but it felt a little slow at parts. The book definitely picked up pace once the initial murder occurred.
This was a super fun mystery / thriller. I definitely recommend it if you like those genres!
Darcy's Grandmother, Seraphine, invites her and her three friends back to the Chateau in France for the first time in twenty years. She says she has something to tell them. The morning of this announcement Seraphine is found stabbed to death. Which one of them killed her?
This was a little slow to start. It's all about the characters at first and it takes a while for the murder to occur. I was going to DNF it but decided to wait until the murder to see if it got better. And I'm glad that I did. At that point, it became a popcorn thriller with me turning the pages as fast as I could. There are several mysteries ongoing and everyone has secrets. The plot gets pretty detailed and somewhat convoluted but this is just a for fun thriller. That little suspension of belief is needed to imagine all this going down at the same time but it's worth it for a fun ride.
