A well written polyamorous romance series with love interests integral to the story. The novels are a little heavy on needless exposition however it is most often mixed with character choices. The the story is satisfying to me. The protagonist has a more lateral growth instead of the standard "Hero's Journey", think do I. All the characters have great depth that involves the overall story arc. Yet, the other allows the reader to discover this naturally instead of more exposition. That the author continues the series is a prayer of mine.

Took me awhile to get to this one. I love K.D. And this book did not disappoint. It is much chunkier than heretic spellblade, neural wraith and demon’s throne. But the action sequences feel enormous and it makes up for the big info dumps. I really like the politics in this one. I’m not sure why this book or series isn’t more liked, the book was really good. Going to start book 2 now.

Set in the same world as his demon throne series but not quite as good. Entertaining if looking for something in the same realm but doubtful worth a continuation.

As far as I can tell this is the first book from this author. Considering that and as I usually review gently the beginning of any new series I would say that this book was very well done. The first series I read from this author is demons throne which was amazing. From there I read Heretics spellblade invoice was arguably even better. The last two books that are available or the emperor forged books. They don't look like they've done as well but I like this one enough to read the second one. If enough people feel as I do the other may continue on with the series.

I started reading K. D. Robertsons other book series first and decided to give this one a try as I hadn’t heard about it before compared to his other more popular series. It’s a shame this one isn’t as popular as his newer stuff because it’s a really good read, actually think it’s my favorite of his books now. Give it a try!

3.0 out of 5 stars I find myself wondering what to say about this.

This book just doesn't seem to have left much of an impression which surprises me because it had an epic "Man against an empire" start with a good foundation and characters that might have been great.

I think what diminishes this book is the age of many of the characters. The hero is centuries old, as is the empire and as are many of the leading villains. And they feel old in the reading about them. There is a poignant sadness to their actions and relationships that just drags the book. It makes too many sections maudlin.

Its not bad, although the action scenes get disjointed more than once, and the power levels of main characters turns battles into massive 1v1 fights rather than tactical and strategic contests. (which isn't uncommon in fantasy tales, but it just seems too obvious here, for some reason.)

I liked this tale, but at the same time, I just didn't care about the characters, the situation or what is to come, and that's not exactly good. 3 stars for now. Review of book 2 might not happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story and writing. Like a magical Julius Cesar rebelling against Rome.

This was a fantastic story, and extremely unique. It put me in mind of reading about a magical Roman Empire, and the main character would be Julius Caesar rebelling against the corruption of the central Empire. The battles are well scripted, the characters have good depth and background, and are all very interesting. The politics is well thought out as this magical Empire fractures, and are related in a way that makes them compelling and interesting instead of tedious and boring like today's politics. Really a great book!

Here we find a experienced and truly powerful protagonist. Yet he also exists in a world with beings that rival and outstrip his power. The characters in this book are a pleasure to read. The world is also extremely detailed and full of fun fantasy races. Our main character has a past that we get to see slowly unfold as he meets people after decades of defending his empire. Yet mystery still surrounds him throughout the book. How has he lived so long? How is he so powerful compared to other humans we see? I will be looking forward to finding these answers in future installments. For those of you worried about multiple love interests please give this a try, the relationships are extremely well written and add to the lore and plot.

Awesome.
Wad surprised to find a kingdom building story with adult themes and harem elements. It was honestly good. I'll be starting book two now.
Hopefully that's just as good.
