This is a pretty good read. This time James Haddock teams up with Gus James for a very interesting version of the medieval saga. Again the characters are smart and the twists and turns are not obvious. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
I liked the main character. I felt his development (time between finding amulet and being summoned to king) was shortchanged. The process of changing to dragon mage was of the most interest to me. The story was still good.
There is poor grammar in many places and incorrect word usage. There is a difference between “insure” and “ensure.” The book has the wrong one every time.
This book is not of the sort I read, but since I enjoyed one of Mr. Haddock’s other books I decided to give it a try. I must say that I enjoyed it and hope that there will be a follow on novel.
I read for escapism; so, this is a good read for me. It's full of magic, has a young, smart & honest young warrior mage with a dragon spirit companion against deceitful nobles and wealthy. He actively changes his world for the better. He needs a love interest. It's clean; and I really like that. It is more day to day writing without pages of description (or angst) so I didn't have to skim past all of that. These guys desperately need an editor/proof reader - I wouldn't charge much ;). But I'm following Haddock now - I'll read his other stories; and, hope for a sequel.
Greatly enjoy how your characters move the story along. When the last page is reached, I want more. Fortunately, our Kindle library has the next one, as my partner in all things tech, and Haddock, has already acquired it. The occasional missing or wrong word does catch my eye, and I must fight down the desire to fix it. Yes, I've been teased for obsessive picture straightening, and cable binding.
Mr. Haddock. I have thoroughly enjoyed your wizard stories (not a huge science fiction fan). Dragon Envoy is no exception. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was because your editor or proofreader fell down on the job. And the instances increased in the latter part of the book. Normally I will silently acknowledge an error and move on. It got to the point toward the end of the book that the errors became annoying.
Please keep writing such fun and good fantasy stories. But find a better proofreader. 😀
So I like honest reviews. I’ll give the no spoilers stuff first: The plot is pretty interesting, with a few twists and turns. The characters are memorable, and the MC has some growth and such. The world building is good, but there could be more information? Like, nations are mentioned but little background on them or why they fight is provided.
SPOILERS:
The MC is just too powerful. Almost everything comes easy to him, which makes the story less interesting. In fact, because he’s so powerful, there’s a bit less room for growth. Rarely do things not go his way, and we don’t really see a bit change in him when they don’t.
I like the commercial empire building that happens. It’s interesting, and explained a bit. Really looking forward to how that improves and changes based on MC’s new persona in the next book.
As with his other books, you see a young make it up in life. He makes it seem too easy, but this is fantasy and the spirit of the tale is the more important thing, the hero not only improving his own life but that of the people around him that are not greedy and punishing those who are.
This was one of the best “mage” stories I’ve read in a long time . Lots of twists and turns, unexpected outcomes and plenty of magic happening right along the way.
Der Plot ist neu und spannend. Der Protagonist ist durchweg sympathisch, wenn auch meiner Meinung nach seine Wirtschaftlichkeit kaum nachzuvollziehen ist. Ich habe das Buch in einem Rutsch verschlungen und warte sehnlichst auf eine Fortsetzung. Der Stern Abzug ist für die unschöne Art dieses und anderer Autoren viele erste Bände zu produzieren (ich habe in den letzten Tagen vier dieses Autors gelesen, alle gut), aber keine Folgebände. Diese leserunfreundliche Politik hält mich davon ab, dieses Buch oder den Autor uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen :-(
I don't normally do reviews but for this book I just had to. I only saw the front cover of this book to start with and then read the blurb, I then had to read the book and ended up reading the book in one sitting. I'm glad I took a shot at this book as it is incredibly well written, the story plot is well thought out too. I won't give spoilers as I don't like those, a person needs to read the book to really get a feel for it themselves, but I will say it starts with a 12yr old boy trying to survive while at war, he saves a knight and becomes his squire and eventually comes to think of them as family, he also saves the King with his healing powers, but as he grows up and his powers start to show more his tutors start preparing him for life in the capital. He makes it to the capital and the fun begins with new friends being made and then deceit and greed from others including the king he healed is chucked in and you have a good read. I really recommend giving it a go whilst I wait somewhat patiently for the next book.
