5.0 out of 5 stars READ. THIS. BOOK.

When I first read snippets and ideas from this book that Olivie shared on her blog, I was already intrigued. To say that I was excited for this book is an understatement? I was so happy when I finally got it and the wait was totally worth it!

One of the things I love about this book is how masterful Olivie is in crafting the sibling dynamics between the Antonova Sisters and the Federov Brothers. I have no idea if she herself has siblings but as for myself, I have a bunch of younger ones and lemme tell ya... That scene with Sasha’s sisters barging into her room? I felt that. As I read the story, I felt like I was going through the same emotions as they were and it made me wonder if I would react the same way.

I absolutely adore Marya Antonova. She has a special place in my heart now. Her loyalty to her family, even until the very end left such a huge impression on me. Her eldest sister vibes really resonated with me cause I’m the eldest in my family as well. Also, her fondness and overprotectiveness towards Sasha and wanting to give her and Lev what she and Dima never got just really hit home for me. I can only wish I’d be half as strong as her if my family ever finds itself in some dire situation that will require Sacrifices™️.

I don’t know it it’s just me but the way Olivie wrote this book is so poetic? I was swooning all over certain passages and I had to pause and re-read them because of how beautiful they were??? She’s so talented in making you care about these characters and getting you invested in their story. I truly didn’t know what would happen until the very end. The way she wove their stories together and the dialogue, my goodness, the dialogue- it was absolutely perfect. If Shakespeare was alive and got to read this, he’d be flattered at the homage to Romeo and Juliet tbh.

So if you enjoyed reading Lovely Tangled Vices, you should give this a chance. Actually, if you love reading any of Olivie’s works or if you’re encountering her for the first time, you should definitely get this book.

I've been a fan of Olivie's for a long time, and she absolutely nailed it with this book! I read the whole thing in a single day because it was just impossible to look away from the well-paced plot, unique setting, and fantastic characterization.

One of my favorite parts of this novel was the depiction of the family dynamics within both the Fedorovs and the Antonovas. I thought that the relationships between Marya Antonova and her sisters were especially well-written and that Marya's character as a whole was heartbreakingly real. As the oldest in my family, I really understood Marya's desire to protect her sisters at all costs, even that of her own happiness. I particularly loved the bond between Marya and Sasha, especially the way that she tried to give Sasha everything she couldn't have herself. Overall, the characters in this story are so well-written that I empathized with all of them at some point in the story, even the apparent villain.

I loved how the author combined traditional Russian folklore with magic in a modern-day NYC to create a truly enthralling setting. The world-building in this story is simply magnificent. The magic was described in such a way that always kept me guessing as to what would happen next, and I was truly surprised by several of the plot events. The author sets the story up for the reader to discover some things before the characters, and it creates the best emotional resolution when the characters finally figure things out. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about big families, urban fantasy with a dash of the paranormal, ill-advised romances, and criminal dynasties.

I'll definitely be reading the rest of her published works now!

This story is about two families: legacy, loyalty, and sacrifice. The urban fantasy setting, where they run their criminal enterprises, is really well-done. The characters are wonderfully realized and fully captivating. The heads of the two feuding families slowly realize what they have done by creating their legacies. Their heirs are certainly their parents' children, but so much more. The characters all have different motivations and ambitions and loyalties, and it's fascinating to see how these ties interact.

Sasha and Lev meet and form a connection - with banter and a lot of sass - before realizing who their families are to each other. The consider their options and make all their choices with open eyes. However, their families make choices too. I found it satisfying that no one was left without facing the consequences of what they'd done. Especially Koschei and Baba Yaga. Marya and Dmitri were asked to give each other up, and it takes years and most of this book for their parents to understand what was lost. Members of these families spend a lot of time hurting each other, but Dmitri and (especially) Marya are forces to be reckoned with. Which is absolutely not to say that they don't cause pain themselves.

The bonds between the families are so touching. Each characters is unique and their relationships feel so real. Sacrifices are made, loyalties are tested, and a couple friends are found in surprising places. This book is wonderful and moving, and you should read it.

If Olivie Blake had written the original Romeo & Juliet, I would actually be a fan of it.

But seriously, this book will draw you in with its enchanting story world and lush characters and will keep you hooked with Blake's signature brilliance in prose. There are so many beautiful, memorable lines in this book. It's definitely a book that just gets more rich with meaning each time you read it. You won't be able to find any good stopping points once you pick it up because you're just going to want to keep reading and reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not her best work at all

2.5 stars. Rounded down because I was bored enough to skim the rest by page 300.

I do think it's an issue of personal taste: the writing was fine aside from a ton of cheesy, melodramatic dialogue. A lot of the events - like visiting the Fae lawyer over and over - felt really repetitive. The only characters I liked didn't get the ending I wanted. Oh well, this author wrote The Atlas Six and Alone with You in the Ether - those were both amazing.

This is a truly exceptional tale of magic, love, and family - in all of its tangled and imperfect glory. Olivie Blake’s writing and world building are incredible, and I just want to stay in this book forever! Every character is so very human (although generally not in the literal sense). Their pains, motivations, and joys are made clear through the brilliant writing. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It is one of the best I’ve read, and I can’t wait to read more of Olivie Blake’s writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely thrilling story of rivalry, revenge, and romance

One For My Enemy is nonstop action from the very first scene. You’re immediately pulled into the hidden magical world of New York City, cheering for characters you’ve barely met and taking sides in a rivalry you’ve never heard of. And of course after you DO get to know them, picking favorites and choosing sides gets VASTLY more complicated. Olivie manages to make the most unlikable of characters both enraging and sympathetic, exposing complicated backstories, problematic emotions, and (of course) more moral ambiguity than you’ll know what to do with. You’ll devour this book!

I ended up binging this book in a day because it was just that good, I couldn't stop. It's one of those rare books that has characters that are so well-fleshed out that no matter what they do, you can't help but root for them. They're all so nuanced that you completely understand everybody's motivation, which makes every character fascinating. The story itself was interesting, and kept me constantly guessing what was going to happen next. If you're considering reading One For My Enemy, I'd highly recommend it.

She created such full, amazing characters like Sasha, Lev, Dima and Masha, even Yaga and Koschei that I felt fully invested in their stories till the last page. I love love love how she was able to mix Russian folklore with modern day magic. I just love this so much and it was such a pleasure to read!

My favorite from this author to date! There’s so much to like. The characters are all very interesting. The setting is unique. There are elements of magic while still feeling grounded in current-day reality. And we get a fantastic, romantic star-crossed lovers trope that ends up having very unpredictable plot points. I love this!

I've read three of Olivie Blake's original novels and they keep getting better and better! I love her writing style and world-building; her characters (even when dark or flawed) have such ineffable poise and depth that I wish I could know them in real life. I loved the plot and its pace. Already looking forward to her next release :)
