How customer reviews and ratings work

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coming of age novel
Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2023
This is a genuinely exceptional coming of age story.I found it very engaging emotionally (I cried three times reading it) and it has stuck with me for several days after finishing it. Categorizing it as a YA novel might be a bit misleading. While I hope kids do read it, to me it felt like a novel that just happened to feature two teenage protagonists. This is a book that doesn't pull its punches, but at the same time is very joyful in many ways. I love Bash and Dro. Like Aristotle and Dante before them, I love Bash and Dro. I loved the way the book demonstrates how two young men can care deeply for each other, how they can be gentle and be bros at the same time. I love what this book can mean for kids today who play sports and have to navigate how homophobic that world can be. I hope high school coaches read this book.I'm a fan of John Updike's Harry Angstrom books and would love to read more about Bash and Dro somewhere down the line in their lives. Also, while I don't subscribe to the idea that making things into movies is the highest form of cultural expression, I do think this book would make one hell of a movie. The author has a degree in screenwriting, so let me just put that suggestion into the universe.I've already bought copies of The Long Run to give to friends. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bash and Dro's Story is Worth Your Time

Actual 4.5 stars.
Spoiler (kinda sorta maybe(ish)) Therefore, don't continue to read this review if you're worried about a possible spoiler (as if I have anyone reading my reviews in the first place...how adorable).

***************************

I love and hate the end of this book, therefore, the half star that is missing represents my own pettiness over the lack of "where are our sweet baby boys now" scene that, while not obligatory, is usually present in most of today's novels. Perhaps, if there was an epilogue or a short follow-up novella, it would have been a whole 5 stars. That little bit of something that gave me a hint of hope for our two sweet boys. You know, that 5 year or 10 year later scene. The one where they a) stay connected and in love (somewhat unrealistic), b) broke apart as love interests while still maintaining a strong friendship and falling in love with another (all while breaking my heart), or c) broke apart amicably due to distance/college/real life, but reconnect years down the road (second chance sucker here, so I vote for this scenario). Alas, this was not the case, so I must withhold my half a star.

I also feel the need to (unhelpfully) share that I do feel a small affinity with Dro in the use of "anywho" (or more often "anyways") as a deflection tactic. Honestly, this really just shows one of the many reasons he, and Bash, stole my heart in this story. Which leads me to state that, other than my one small matter of contention, Bash and Dro's story is one worth reading and it will continue to sit with me for a very long minute.

I love this book, and I'I'm just glad that I was able to find it. I remember reading it on Wattpad and it was always one that I came back to to read over again in my archives. One day though it was gone and I panicked and threw in search word terms that I could remember and thankfully Amazon did not do me wrong. I was even more excited to see that I could get a printed copy. I am in love with the way this author writes so even though I don't usually buy books I just had to. So well written!!! It's just one of those stories that stands out with the subject matter and the development of the characters and the nuance in their emotions and the choices they make. To say the very least I never get bored reading this book. I can't wait to read more and to of course reread again!!

This book is all about the characters, who they are and who they become. James Acker starts the main characters quietly and slowly. He painstakingly reveals their souls to us with patience and detail. He digs down into the roots, the source of these characters to the point that you really care about them, you experience so closely their feelings and emotions that they become your friends. Explicit scenes are usually standard fair but not with these characters. These scenes come alive in their thoughts and reflections making us still focus on who they are, not what they are doing. Things I remember; an ant lost in a thatch of chest hair, finally understanding the lighthouse, working thru the family connections, the pause in the action by the “straight” character that was anything but guilty second thoughts that surprised the hell out of me for the beauty of it. I read this book slowly, over about 10 days because every time I returned to it I first re-read a few previous chapters to get myself back in to the characters. This released more emotion in me than any novel I have read in years, literally years. Thank you James Acker.

I'm a sap and I'm glad this didn't have a classic tragic gay ending, the characters are beautiful and the plot has such a nice progression. I wonder what my life would have been like had I found a Sandro 🥲

This book really touched me. Acker created a couple amazing characters in Bash and Dro as we follow their lives through their last year of high school. His writing is very descriptive. I won’t give away the story in my review but will say I found the ending very satisfying. Two thumbs up from me!

I love this book…it has been quite a while since I enjoyed a story this much. These characters, with their histories and families and new bond together, come alive on the pages and make me listen and think just like Bash and Sandro do with each other. Such love and care and genuine fondness all unfold for us readers on every page. This is a story to share with family and friends for sure! If you want to feel inspired by the importance of friendship and being genuine and learning to truly listen to someone so that you can then love yourself, then you will easily be as moved and engaged as I am by this wonderful novel!
