So I enjoyed this one. Maybe because for once I knew what I was getting into.

What Have We Done tells the story of Jenna and the friends she made when she became an orphan and was sent to the Savoir House for teenagers. During this time, the children there endured bullying, and then girls started to disappear.

Now as an adult, Jenna is married and has two stepchildren. She also has a past and a secret.

Donnie was a rock star...now not so much. He has a problem with addiction and is on the brink of losing it at all.

Nico is a successful reality TV show producer but with a gambling problem.

The three of them will have to meet again after so many years when someone is targeting them. The past is catching up with them. They have a bullseye on their back.

Narrated by mostly 3 POVs and two sets of timelines, this novel is fast-paced and has enough action to keep you going.

Despite being a different type of story from Alex Finlay's earlier work, I was entertained.

Cliffhanger: No

Twenty-five years ago Jenna, Donnie, Nico, Ben and Artemis lived at Savior House, a home for parentless teens. When the home was shut down, they all went their separate ways and tried to put the abuse they suffered there behind them. When one of them is killed and attempts are made on the lives of the others, they reunite to figure out why they are being targeted and by who.

What Have We Done is told from the POV of Jenna, Donnie and Nico. We meet each of them when the attempt on their life is made and then follow them as they try and figure out what is going on. Through each of their POVs we also get a look back at their time at Savior House and what life was like for them. I really liked getting the back story on these characters. I liked Jenna the best. She was one badass woman.

I loved all the twists and turns this book had. I never figured out who was after them or why. As the book neared the end the tension and suspense ramped up and I was on the edge of my seat.

I hadn’t heard of this author before. Read this book on a recommendation from a friend. Excellent plot. Moved along quickly. Even the villains were somewhat enjoyable.

This book was definitely action packed and easy to read! A few scenes were a little hard to believe but other than that this book kept me guessing until the very end.

“The secret to life is to find something you love and get them to pay you to do it.”

“Between the overbearing parents who all think their spawn are gifted, the administrators who’ve never spent a day in the classroom yet constantly change the curriculum, the politicians obsessed with what you can’t teach, and having a master’s degree but being micromanaged like teenage hourlies at McDonald’s.”

MAR ‘23 - 3 STARS
DESCRIPTION: A stay-at-home yoga mom with a past.
A has-been rock star with a habit.
A reality TV showrunner with a crushing gambling debt.
Three disparate lives.
One big secret.
Twenty five years ago, Jenna, Donnie, Nico, Arty, and Ben were the best of friends, a bond forged as residents of Savior House, an abusive group home for wayward teens. When the home was shut down—after the disappearance of several residents—the group was disbanded. Though the trauma from Savior House has never left them, each went on to successful, if troubled, lives. They haven’t seen each other since they were teens, but now are reunited for a single haunting reason: someone is killing them one by one.

REVIEW:
Author’s debut book in ‘21 that I read was Every Last Fear which I gave 4 stars but his last book, The Night Shift in ‘22 only received 2 stars. A decent plot but definitely not a “thriller” for me. Dragged & boring for me. Felt a little choppy; this stopped me from connecting with any characters. I would wait for a sale on any further books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Good One From Alex Finlay

When I found out Alex Finlay's WHAT HAVE WE DONE dropped, I hit the 1-Click option so fast! I am not a stranger to his literary work, so I knew this one would be a good one. I was right!

What I love about WHAT HAVE WE DONE was the pacing of the story, which was a little slower. Normally, I like reading fast-paced novels, but this one works perfectly slowed down in the beginning.

The characters and the storyline were enjoyable to read. Jenna was the character I thoroughly enjoyed reading. She was a bad ass!

I will admit. It took me a small while to finish reading this book, but once the story began to move quickly, so did my reading! I won't hold this against Mr. Finlay, because, like I said before, the slower pace of the storyline worked for this particular story.

I was satisfied with the ending. I loved that final twist. The book is an incredible, excitable read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Secret of the Past Come Back to Haunt the Four Friends of Savior House
Reviewed in Australia on May 3, 2023

Saviour House is a group home for children who society has disposed of.

Run by the sleazy Mr Brook, and terrorised by his son Derek.

It also the place where Jenna, Nico, Donnie, and Ben meet.

It also the place where they hide their biggest secret.

A secret that they never tell, or talk about until twenty five years late when it comes back to haunt them.

Because, now, one of them has been killed, and it appears someone is coming for the rest.

Nico - a gambling addict, and Reality TV star

Donnie - Ageing RockStar, aka Donnie Danger, addicted to drugs, alcohol, and women

Ben - Supreme Court Judge

And

Jenna.

Jenna, of all the friends has one of the biggest transitions.

She was spotted by the mysterious Sabine, at the group home, and became a “La Femme Nikita”secret operative.

That is until she meets the nerdy taxman, Simon, and became Stepmom to teenage Willow and five year old Lulu.

So, as she settles into domesticity, shocking news breaks.

One of her Saviour House friends is brutally murdered, thus threatening her family life.

While she gets them to safety, Nico and Donnie find their lives at risk.

Someone from their past knows what they did, and is now targeting them all.

Why ? and why now?

As the killers draw closer, Jenna and her Saviour House cohorts have to figure out just how much their secret has been discovered, and just who is pulling the strings.

Great read about the pursued and the pursuer’s unraveling secrets from their past, while dealing with their issues in the present.

I don't even know how to describe this book. There were some interesting characters, a few intense scenes and an action packed ending but I can't tell you what it was even about. I would've liked to have been a fly on the wall when this story was pitched to the publisher. Because it really is a book about nothing. I enjoy Alex Finlay's writing and hope the next one suits me better.
