5.0 out of 5 stars A better version of RE: Zero?

I'll get this out of the way now. This is definitely a solid 5/5 book from the indie author sphere. Decent prose, almost no spelling mistakes that I noticed, and solid editing. All that said, it's probably not my cup of tea.

I'm in a desperate search for a somewhat light adventure, time loop story much like Mother of Learning. This series is well reviewed so I gave it a shot. I can confidently say this is far from anything like MoL and is much closer to what Re:Zero is if you are familiar with that.

I've never read Re:Zero but I have seen the first season of it. Considering the range of light novels and web novels I have read from Japan, I think anyone looking for a more mature/serious and less anime-y version of Re:Zero will thoroughly enjoy Re:Monarch.

In terms of how dark the story can go, I think both are probably equal in that respect. McCoy is careful to never tread too far into the territory of being extreme in the scenarios and descriptions he puts the MC in. You won't be getting any overly graphic descriptions of rape (no instances yet, thankfully), torture (happens but the descriptions are kept quite short in the moment, and even briefer in later references to the event), or abuse of minors (happens, but you only see the results, not a description of the acts).

The pacing is good and I like that the growth and maturing of the MC's personality has been slow and gradual. I felt like I could see the weights being put on the scale after events occurred and the MC digested what had happened. Power-wise, even at the end of Book 1, I don't think the MC is really all that impressive. Much of the growth you will find is seeing a character go from a bitter coward into a bitter hero.

My main complaints are mostly in the "not my cup of tea" category. First, there aren't a ton of happy notes in this series; and for me that tends to hit my mood. This is a dark series so there will either be a storm cloud over the character or you'll know one is just on the horizon and coming. Second, the use of flashbacks is kind of jarring sometimes. Sometimes the flashback has relevance and is obvious why McCoy included it, but other times I was left scratching my head. It could be that I'm just daft though. Beyond this, I don't have many other complaints right now. I suspect (but don't know) that we'll see the side characters get rotated in and out as the story goes on, which is kind of a negative in my book; but we'll see.

Again, this is a solid 5/5. If you know you like darker stories or really like(d) RE: Zero, then I strongly encourage you to check this out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Great pacing, has a pretty good length of time involved as well so everything doesn't feel like it is happening instantly. All in all I highly recommend giving this a read, and I am very much looking forward to reading more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, but not sure I like where this series is going

Giving this five stars because anything less on Amazon is bad for the author.
And I did enjoy this story. I read it in a few sittings. It was gripping and well written.

But I’m not sure I’ll continue reading this series. The story is really good, but (based off the first few books) the author has trapped the main character in a cycle of “the correct decision is the one that will hurt everyone else”.

Every decision the character makes is understandable, given his circumstances. Probably even correct. But as the series continues, the circumstances begin to feel more and more contrived. The author is going for angst and pain here. Once or twice it would be powerful. But the way it happens over and over again is just tiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Dark Fantasy

This is extremely good and hit just the right spot for me. It is much darker than similar books but I really like that with my stories. I would mention the power growth is pretty slow, which can be annoying at times, but the character is generally witty/smart enough it doesn’t affect the book too much. The beginning is also a little slow but again, this book is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark reincarnation time loop progression fantasy
Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2022

For those that watch anime, this is very similar in feel to Re:Zero (as the title of the book suggests). For those who don't, this is a reincarnation time loop progression fantasy with a fairly psychologically dark tone. Lots of violence, including against children, both individualized and on a larger war-crimes case. There is no sexual violence, and any sexual references are limited to comments in conversation and off-screen consensual adult activities. Fantasy style demons are included in this setting as well if that is a deal-breaker for you. It's told from Cairn's POV in first-person for those whom it matters to.

Okay, trigger warnings concluded. This book focuses heavily on character development both positive and negative. Mental health is a concern and (from my layman's perspective) seems pretty accurately portrayed. The perspective of the main character (Cairn) shifts during the course of the book as he experiences each of the events in compelling ways. The way he changes his viewpoint on certain characters is very interesting as well as how he adjusts his moral compass as he goes deeper into the abyss.

This story is long enough to actually be two books and the story arcs contained could easily have been split in two (roughly at the halfway point, even!). All of that means that you get more bang for your buck! Seriously, though, I would recommend this book to those that enjoy darker fantasies with a main character who gets harder as events happen to him and his rose-colored glasses get slowly muddied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Novel

This book was quite a bit more sophisticated and entertaining than I expected.

It has a great depth and is in no way predictable which is quite… refreshing.

I found it difficult to put down for any length of time and I don’t mind a bit (though my laundry is a bit behind).

Anyone interested in a truly unique world and concept will enjoy this book - as long as you aren’t too squeamish- it gets real at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely great (don't read prolog)

I absolutely adore this book and devoured it in two short days. While the influences of MoL and similar were appearant it doesn't take away the uniqueness the story held. I will now continue to read the following books with similar enthusiasm and leave you with the note that appearantly one should skip the prolog. I wouldn't know haven't read it as I followed this widely given advice and wanted to inform everyone else who might want to read this story about this apparently important Tipp

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!

This book is a real gem and refreshing in its approach to good and evil... This book is all gray and continuously challenges our concept of right and wrong... Fair warning it's an adult fiction, not in a sexual way but the way it approaches the morality of war.... One of the finest book on time travel I have read.... Can't wait for the part 2
