I listened to Yahtzee Croshaw reading Existentially Challenged on a long road trip. The miles flew by. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I loved how the characters developed. I laughed out loud at the turns of phrase. The mystery played out well. I enjoy a good parlor scene with surprises and this was a good one. I highly recommend this book. I especially recommend the audio version. Croshaw has a dramatic reading voice that plays up the story. You are in for a treat when you hit "play" on this book.
5.0 out of 5 starsA great sequel and fantastic book

One of the best books I've listened to in a long time. Yahtzee does an excellent job with differentiating character voices between individuals and playing both to and against common tropes in written media. The plot is good and manages to keep you feeling clued in and drawing similar conclusions, while still managing to be quite surprising and engaging. This is interspersed with a nice dose of world building thay expands on things only briefly mentioned in the previous book. This book turned me around on a couple of characters too! The author did a good job of spending more time on some of the characters that got less focus on the first book, and fleshes them out in a way that doesn't feel forced. 10/10!
I would strongly reccomend listening to the audio book over reading the printed version though. The author's reading adds a lot of depth and character that, while present in the text, is much more impactful in the way he reads it (in my opinion anyway).
5.0 out of 5 starsWonderful Continuation of Characters and Plots

With the first novel in this new series, Yahtzee succeeded in creating a wonderful satire of social graces and the modern world, slamming up against supposed outdated views of demons and Elder Gods. With the second, he moves beyond merely satirizing and grows the caricatures into real characters. The end of the first left me wanting more humor, but the end of Existentially Challenged left me wanting more of the relationships, conflict, and care these people started showing each other. This has felt the closest to Mogworld (my personal favorite of his work so far) that does satire in its best form. Mock, joke, criticize, entertain, but unless we care about the characters these events are happening to, the story and enjoyment fall flat. Existentially Challenged achieves satire in its best form, no question.
