What I enjoyed most about this book is how Rennie tells stories from cutting his teeth as a young leader on a US Naval submarine, and relates those to various situations he later faced as an executive in private industry. He not only shows how early experiences in our leadership journey influence and inform future endeavors in deep, meaningful ways, but he is able to pinpoint very specific actions leaders in any industry can take to influence others and achieve results.
Most importantly, the leadership concepts presented in this book revolve around people, and the idea that we can accomplish nothing in our organizations, or on our teams, without putting people first. Rennie identifies many ways in which leaders can do that, and interacts with readers through the use of reflective questions that make this book as much about the reader's own development as anything else. I really appreciated his focus on my own learning and application!
This book is engaging, relevant, easy to understand, and organized very well. It is great for seasoned or aspiring leaders, and is foundational for anyone wanting to influence others to achieve shared goals.
