So, I originally read this series as a teenager and wasn't sure they would hold up as an adult. In some ways, they don't, but they are still fun. A lot of these reviews mention the dubcon aspect of these stories, since some characters are a bit over motivated by hormones and instincts, but I think It is pretty clear that no still means no in the end.
For Ambereye specifically, a lot of people say that they did not enjoy it because they hated Jolie's characterization and found her impossible to relate to. I found this odd, because I always liked Jolie the best when I first read this series. I want to put forward an idea: Jolie is autistic. As a person who was diagnosed with autism later in life, reading this now, it seemed really obvious to me, from how she responds to touch, her reaction to emotional responses, her specialized interests, and even the way she thinks of herself, as the real "monster" or the "too weird" one, or even at one point "nearly sociopathic", that Jolie is 100% on the spectrum. I think if you read this with that in mind, you will have a better, well rounded experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Second in the series is better

Ambereye is the second installment in McKnight's Garoul series about a werewolf family. In this one, Julie Garoul, who is a top executive in the family's business Ambereye, Inc., is a demanding workaholic whose employees try to avoid her as much as possible. Everyone loves Hope Glassy because she's kind, considerate and equally hardworking. When Hope returns from a serious illness she can't believe she's been assigned to Julie as a personal assistant, but she's determined to make the best of the position. Can two strong willed women make this situation work? And just how do you explain to someone that you and much of your family can turn into wolves?

This book has a great deal more humor in it than the first one in the series. McKnight may be more comfortable with this family she has created. The sparring between Julie and Hope in the beginning is similar to the banter that goes on in "The Odd Couple." It's a classic story of a curmudgeon who is slowly turned into a likeable character by a lighter spirit.

People who think they don't like supernatural stories should give this book a chance. It's well told and entertaining. If you want a good laugh, it's good for that. It's an easy read and the main characters are very appealing. Besides, the Garoul family and how it functions in a modern world is very interesting. What more can a reader ask for in exchange for a few hours?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sequel!

This is McKnight's second book in her Garoul family series, and it was wonderful, even better than the first book.

Hope becomes the personal assistant to Jolie Garoul, a workaholic with a heart of stone. Or so it seems. Jolie suffers more from insecurities and social awkwardness than harboring any ill will, and McKnight brings that out in her character. I just found it a little hard to believe that someone as good looking as Jolie is socially awkward!

Hope has baggage and insecurities of her own as she's recovering from a very serious illness.

Will these two get together? Does a bear (or wolf) poop in the woods??

Enjoy the ride as Jolie and Hope break down barriers and learn to trust in love.

Gill McKnight captured my attention with Goldenseal, but after reading Ambereye she's now firmly in my favorite authors. I love the world she's created and the more she fleshes it out the better it gets. Other reviews are correct that there's a change in tone between these first two books in the series. There is barley any element of mystery and absolutely no horror in this one. But that's fine. It's great to see that this world can handle many types of story whether it's mystery, horror or romantic comedy as this one is.

I loved the leads again and the slow growth of their connection and affection was very well handled. The steamy scenes were excellent again although I don't think they beat my favorite one in Goldenseal.

I'm jumping right into Indigo Moon and I really hope there are many more stories to come in this excellent series!

Curiosity got the better of me so I brought this book. I wanted some decent fantasy/supernatural action. It started out just fine, funny, the kind of humor you'd find in one of those old Doris Day movies. Another reviewer mentioned the same thing and I agree. For me, all was fine until the road trip started. After that, it went downhill pretty fast. Jolie is falling too hard too soon for Hope, yes, she is of a different species, and in essence she "imprinted" on Hope, however, Jolie became childish. She went from a cold harpy to a ball of mushy adolescent boy! Where was her fight? Her spunk?

Hope was likable enough, I liked that Gill McKnight humanized her by giving her a disability. It made the character flawed and imperfect without taking away from the spirit. I prefer my characters to fall in love romantically over time. When these two realized they wanted each other it was too silly. The humor didn't stop so it actually felt immature to me. The love scenes were okay. Just not romantic. The ending shamelessly left things open for another book, which I hate. I prefer closure at the end, series or not.

I wanted to like this, the reviews were favorable. It just wasn't there for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars McKnight doesn't disappoint.

One of my favorites! This book is hilarious. It was nice to see Mcknight's humor again. This book made me love the series. But then again, I read everything Mcknight writes. She doesn't disappoint with this book. One thing about this book in particular (mild spoiler) is that the characters aren't portrayed as being "drop dead gorgeous" or "the most beautiful woman they've ever seen" (in the way that a lot of other lesbian romance novels portray women). The characters are more realistic.

Their chemistry and interactions were the best to read! I definitely would read this again.

Very good read, I pvef the humor. I didn't feel like it was over bearing. I do believe once Jolie took Hope home it should have been slower. But that was okay. Iy did kind of ricochet to the end.

This series keeps getting better! The more I read, the more enamored I've become. Hope and Jolie are both strong willed, fun loving and badassed women! I admired Jolie's quiet strength and her tough work ethics. I am also delighted at Hope's resilience and her quick wit. I must confess that I'm deeply in love with these vibrant characters and I can't wait to read the other books in this series!

This is the lesbian fantasy book I've been searching for!! Don't bother milling over whether to buy it or not and just get it. It's an amazing read and it won't take you a month. You'll be quickly engaged and unable to put the book down, just the way it should be. If you like this book then I also suggest reading Gill's other books. Mrs. McKnight is a fantastic author and she really knows how to write to please. It's definitely a must read for those fantasy lovers, and a must have for any young lesbian.

I'm warming up to the supernatural genre, but you still have to like the lead characters to make the journey. Jolie's personality wasn't exactly endearing. I don't mind difficult lead characters, I mind lead characters without personalities you can sink your teeth into (pun intended). Even after the "big reveal" she remained a bit remote and one-dimensional (Asperger's?) . She excelled at primal instincts, but someone like Hope would need much more.
