5.0 out of 5 starsWHAT FUN! I WANT TO RENT THIS PLACE!

I LOVED this book. I have lived in several foreign countries but only in rental places. I am in awe of all that the author was able to accomplish especially since she did not speak Italian well. Kyle took all the problems and red tape with the renovation in stride and made it seem like fun. She gives Americans a good name abroad. I just wish I had been one of the friends who was invited to the weekends and parties. Really recommend this book--it will sweep you away to an Italy pre-covid.
Altared is a must read whether you’ve ever renovated a home or ever been to Italy. Altared is more than a comedic tale or a memoir. It’s a test of Ms. Ball’s patience and fortitude when the odds seemed stacked against her. Laughter, friends, family, and a good glass of wine saw her through it all. I laughed my way through the book.
'Altared' by Kyle Tackwell Ball is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at renovating an old property in a foreign country, not written to convince that everything is quaint and charming but written with realism and a good dose of humor. The author discovered that unexpected challenges awaited her as her renovation project progressed and I appreciated her honesty in writing about them, as well as giving space to the satisfactions and special people who helped her along the way. Overall, I found it to be a very readable, well-balanced memoir that kept me entertained. Readers who have been to Italy, who dream of Italy, who have a love/hate relationship with 'il bel paese', who have tackled difficult remodels in any country, or who just want to escape to another place and enjoy the ride will find this a very pleasurable book. I highly recommend it!
