5.0 out of 5 stars One Nation Under God, Indivisible

I follow Jack on Twitter, so I knew bits and pieces of his story. That made me even more eager to read this book. His personal story, as well as the experiences of those Obama-to-Trump voters that he found and spent time with, is shocking, saddening, and uplifting. As an always Conservative Trump supporter, I have my own tales of being at odds with friends and family, but the journey from the Left to the Right is much more harrowing.

Jack's description of the Democrat mindset is SCARY. Many Conservatives have seen it in action, being censored on social media, attacked by Liberals, being called every "-ist" there is. For these lifelong Democrat to be ostracized and abandoned because they dared to question the direction in which the party moved is the very antithesis of the inclusionary promises made by Liberals. If you don't mindlessly agree, you aren't included. The Progressive Liberal Left is undermining and attempting to destroy the values and foundations on which America was formed.

Democrat to Deplorable is a must-read for all Conservatives, not just those who have found their new tribe. We all have to remember this:
"I pledge Allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible,
with Liberty and Justice for all."

5.0 out of 5 stars and evidently had great editorial guidance

The 2016 election saw much analysis, most of it wrong. If they had this book during the election, it would have been a different story, but not a different result. This book is extremely well written, and evidently had great editorial guidance. The prose is clear and flows smoothly. The book traces the path of Jack from staunch Democrat to voting for Trump, which, by the way, does not really mean Republican.

I hope progressives/Democrats read this book, because they will realize that those who voted for Trump are not the idiots/racists from middle America that they imagine Trump voters to be. Some Trump voters are among the most educated, most well traveled people you will meet. They love different cultures, different races, and different customs. In fact, many Trump voters live among the vast blue sea, but they hold a secret they dare not say: they voted for Trump, and would do it again.

This book really spoke to me because I too was an Obama voter. I hated George W. Bush with a passion, and believe that he was responsible for one of the greatest foreign policy boondogles in the history of this country (Iraq). I gave money to Democrats, even those outside of my district. And yet, and yet...how can this be? Forget everything you know, or think you know. Definitely forget about anything you heard on CNN or other network news. This book is the definitive chronicling of one of the most consequential elections in modern American history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack Murphy answers Hillary Clinton's Question "What Happened?"

Jack Murphy has done what media pundits, pollsters, psychologists, political experts and fortune tellers failed to do over the past 18 months--he has presented an explanation for why so many voters supported Trump in the 2016 election.
Using his own personal experience, extensive interviews and a detailed survey, Murphy uncovers and shares the reasons 9 million democrats became "Deplorable". Then Murphy unravels these personal stories to show how broken campaign promises, policy decisions, a complex global economy and a changing culture created an environment where voting for Trump was not just a preference but an imperative.
If you want to understand why smart, educated, compassionate Americans would turn their backs on the democratic party to vote for an unrefined, offensive, inexperienced political outsider like Trump, this is the book you need to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Democrat to Proud Deplorable

(Full Disclosure: I have met the author in person a few times and participated in the survey cited in the book.)

When I met the author about a year ago, he told me that he was working on a book to do his part to explain the sudden shift of people like us who were reliably Democrat that then went the other way. After much waiting, that book is finally here and it exceeds my expectations by providing a comprehensive look. Here is a story that is part autobiography/part research study/part reveal of the forces and institutions that shape the way we think and how those beliefs aren’t backed up by any objective measure.

Laid out on these pages is the author’s struggle to recognize a party that used to be for working people and protecting the little guy from big business to one that had morphed into one where acknowledging biological differences was evil and a race to who could be the most oppressed at any given time. Throughout the book, a recurring theme is that these Democrat to Deplorable voters didn’t leave the party, but rather, the party left them as Democrats committed themselves to wander further and further away from objective reality.

While there are a whole multitude of reasons that could be attributed to the loss of Clinton, this book is a fantastic primer to help those on the Left to understand a little bit better, this sudden shift of voters, most of who lost something for voting for Trump. In addition, this book is also for those on the Right who want to read how a transformation from one side to the other can happen. In conclusion, this book is a worthy addition to help those understand what happened in 2016 a little bit better. Attached below is a highlight that I feel optimistic about becoming a popular highlight:

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and at times difficult to read

I had high expectations of this book having seen positive reviews. I was genuinely interested in how so many voters flipped from Obama to Trump. Ultimately though, I was quite disappointed. Being from the UK I have a layman's understanding of US politics. However, reading the author thoughts I struggled to believe he was ever a lifelong Democrat voter. Rather than a journey of discovery to the benefits of voting for Trump it appeared that he was always going to vote the way he did. This appeared to mainly around his dislike of the liberal left, Hillary Clinton and women in general. The book is though is quite well written and not all arguments are invalid. However, most seem to be motivated by the gut of the author or his lived experiences rather than any real 'facts' analysis or insight. It feels at times like you are listening to a drunken guy in a bar who's trying to use academic language to add values to his angry rants. The author talks a lot about how repressed and beaten down white men are but for me at least this isn't the world I see. Still, worth a read for some but towards the end in particular I found it a bit of a struggle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and researched examination of the facts as well as the author's own story.

I just finished this book a couple of days ago and I was really impressed by it's well researched and flowing style. The author, Jack Murphy, presents a heartfelt and personal account of his own journey from Obama voter and true blue Democrat to a reluctant but confirmed Trump voter in 2016. At times his personal story is painful and visceral but the points are well thoughout and reasoned.

This is interspersed with survey data and other research done for the book which helps to paint a picture of the 9 million odd people who switched from Obama to Trump and explores their motivations.

As a neutral to American politics, its an interesting and compelling read. It isn't written for the hardline Trump supporter but feels like it would have more appeal to the open minded, inquisitive individual who wants to know why so many people switched sides in 2016.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read and would recommend to anyone wanting to gain an insight into the thought processes of an Obama/Trump Voter

Jack's book is well written and engaging as he explores both his own story and the stories of a cross-section of Obama/Trump voters before then delving into a thematic exploration of some of the key ideological and cultural factors at play in the 2016 election.

The stories are moving, and ring with truth, but it's also a book based on far more original research than I had anticipated, complete with an appendix which shows the data more clearly. This takes the book from being simply an opinion piece into a credible analysis of this political phenomenon.

Its main weakness is it's strength - this is Jack's story and exploration. Towards the end that can seem to give him a slightly over-inflated sense of significance, but simply by sharing his perspective it's bound to centre on him and so any criticisms along these lines would be weak at best.

An interesting read and would recommend to anyone wanting to gain an insight into the thought processes of a Blue turned Red voter. This book will gain significance if (when) Trump wins another term.
