5.0 out of 5 starsBrilliant and brilliantly simple

"Dark Blood" is one of those works that feels simpler than it really is. Like a great and pure song, these stories seem elemental, as if they were discovered and exhumed rather than written. It's a true accomplishment to create something that feels this natural, this deceptively real, and make it look as easy as Gibbon has. These stories sneak up on you in sly ways, making you feel both the beauty and the shiver of dread long after the pages have been closed. Highly recommended.
Deliciously dark! This collection of weird dark tales is a delight. The stories were so original, and I loved the writing style. If strange and creepy (with a good helping of body horror) is your jam, dig into this one.

Bravo! Emma Gibbon creates interesting characters and vivid scenes in this terrifyingly brilliant book of short stories. I enjoyed digging into all of them, but Devour really crept under my skin.
5.0 out of 5 starsLife-Affirming in Darkness for Dark Times

These stories are stunning. These are - 17 in 160 pages - but each one is carefully developed. They are exquisite affirmations of the beauty of life. Ok, ok, that sounds weird for a horror collection with a skull on the cover, but it’s true.
“St Scholastica’s Home for Children of the Sea” has a familiar underdog versus the mob theme, but lingers on neither, painting a picture of nature in all its fantastic clarity doing what is necessary to survive - and humanity helping. Positive environmental-horror?!
As another reviewer said, Gibbon makes the stories flow easily, clearly, engagingly, deceptively so. This is a collection with the power to draw in readers not usually inclined to horror. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story, particularly in these challenging times when a little escape, a little hope, and a little darkness can give us all resolve to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent Horror Collection

It’s always a big risk to purchase a book by an author you’ve never read, but I’d heard a lot about Emma Gibbon from other horror writers so I was curious. Turns out she’s everything they said and more. Each story is a well-polished crystal of horror with many facets and endings impossible to predict. Rarely have I read a collection wherein every single story is enthralling. Emma J Gibbon is destined to be one of the greats in horror fiction.
This collection of short stories is fantastic. Once I began, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. If horror is your thing, or even if it isn’t (for me, it isn’t), you should give this a go.
5.0 out of 5 starsLittle gems that will stick in your head for life

This book is in my head. I had to read it in stages (unknown for me) because each story had the power to make me stop, and consider, and worry, and smile, and think about putting the book in the freezer, and then pick it up again, and go back for more. Just buy it. At least one of these little gems will stick in your head for life, I guarantee it.

Brilliant collection of short stories. Had to keep putting it down and leaving it between stories. Cellar Door was a particular favourite and left me on edge!

Bought this for my 18yr old niece who likes horror. She this compilation of short stories, her favourite being “The Porch.” She can’t wait for more from this author.
