Childhood trauma, conditioning, the hidden glass ceilings we learn from our families~ these are things that can undermine our achievement of our higher goals... and they are usually subconscious, coming from the primitive parts of our brain. i had experienced tools to deal with these things in therapy... EMDR, in particular. When i could no longer afford therapy, i kept wishing i could find a way for more, or to accomplish this "rewiring" of my nervous system on my own.i was THRILLED to hear Patrick speak to these issues while being interviewed by Mark Divine~ he had developed a technique of doing this rewiring on your own! this book educates us more deeply on our brain/nervous system, how our primitive brain responds to early conditioning about success, and describes how we can break our own glass ceilings... developed through his own experience. Amazing, wonderful, possible, liberating.Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Afraid

There are so many voices and faces in this "self help" space. If you are looking for feel good and general motivation, this book may fill that need. If you really want to make a change, a change that will reach much further than a few tips and techniques for improvements in certain aspects of your life, then this is your book. Want to be a better parent? This book will show you the path. Want to be a better leader? This book will show you the path. Want to get off the couch and do big things? This book will show you the path. Part badassery and part science combine to move you towards your best and then the next version of your best and then the next. Well worth the time and the read from a very avid non-reader.

I can see how this book would be great for a cooperation's personal growth sector, or their public speaking circuit. I found it to be highly relevant in both business and athletic settings. The author gives us the tools to create a clear pathway to success by analyzing our fears and using this information to make better choices and to progress further in personal, business, and athletic endeavors. I loved his stories and analogies, combined with the science in an easily understandable form. He traveled the world and interviewed the people at the cutting edge of this technology to bring us the information in an interesting and digestible form. The fact that the author engages the reader with his own personal stories and life experiences truly drew me in. I really liked the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Like Brutus

Sweeney takes proven neuroscience and real life experiences to teach us how to train the brain and harness fear as fuel. After reading Fear Is Fuel, I no longer have to worry with fear about past events that have occurred to me or what may happen tomorrow.

My greatest take away from Fear Is Fuel, comes not from Sweeney, Navy SEAL BUD/S training, Doctor Shame O’Mara, Doctor Joe LeDoux, Wile E. Coyote, Coach Rosenberg, Doctor Bradley Peterson or General Patton. My greatest take away in the book comes from Sweeney’s 125 pound dog Brutus. Limiting free energy by “staying in the present” like Brutus will allow me to enjoy every moment in life for myself. Time to live in the moment like Brutus and wag my tail in the face of FEAR!!!

Fear is Fuel starts out by sharing how some of history’s great explorers and innovators overcame fear and also about the author’s own impressive journey of overcoming a paralyzing fear of flying to make the most of his life. The book also serves as a guidebook for the rest of us mere mortals trying to go beyond the tired saying “get out of your comfort zone”. With a number of illustrative examples and a clear method, Fear is Fuel shows you in practical ways how to not feed the amygdala with distracting “free energy” and how you instead can embrace fear and cross over your “fear frontier” to take action fully aligned with your dreams and aspirations. Highly recommended!

I have known Patrick for 25 years. I think it is important when you read books to ask yourself, "what is this person's experience? What credibility does the author have?" Patrick has executed on what he writes about. I think this fact alone matters. HIs book is different than an academic approach to the neuroscience of the brain and how we manage fear. Patrick has experienced fear from several angles: athletics, business, and as an adventurer. As an active competitive athlete and entrepreneur myself, the fear of athletic pursuits is different than the fears one experiences in business. We all have fear triggers inside us and Patrick has given me another lens into understanding how fear can fuel you to attain your biggest ambitions. Enjoy

It is difficult to find well researched and well written content that can add value to every dimension of your life. Fear is Fuel is one of the few sources I've found in the last several years. All of us have a fear mechanism. We can't avoid it. This book is the cheat sheet on how to channel that fear to growth and success. Patrick masterfully blends cutting edge research with real world examples and practical life applications that extend beyond the four walls of our offices and homes. Buy this book and give it to your kids, co-workers and and friends. Then buy them a cup of coffee and dig into it. You'll both be better off!

I had been contemplating Fear in my life and how it can motivate and help us achieve potential in everything we do. I'm loving Patrick's book which takes an in-depth, researched look at the topic of Fear. I've followed Patrick on his journey to write this book; it's refreshing to meet someone who is living and breathing a topic that affects us all. He is looking to affect change in all of us, not just based on his own experience but on research which is the bedrock of learning and growth. Fear is Fuel will get you thinking and help you affect the change or outcomes you are looking for.

The author delves into each aspect of the internal process that we have when fear invades us, and gradually takes us on a journey of internal recognition and how to solve those unknowns that sometimes a psychologist is not able to see in therapy. It is not a substitute for the professional therapist but it does contribute to a better understanding. Great investment of time read

The author brings together an eclectic collection of interesting anecdotes and some scientific research to lay bare certain insights into an emotion that has, I would imagine, afflicted every living human being. The guidelines offered for overcoming one's fears are general enough that it's hard to imagine anyone couldn't apply them to their circumstances.
