4.0 out of 5 stars A short biography and set of book reviews

This is the 4th hourly history book that I have finished, and I am finding that they are great introductions to the subject matter. I recommend the hourly history books, including this one, as a starting area to:
1) See if the subject is personally interesting
2) Become conversant in the material
3) Pursue additional information starting with the bibliographies provided

I had heard the name of George Eliot before, and also some of the book titles that she was famous for, but I didn't know much else. To me, she is a tragic figure, living in a period of time that was very constraining for women, and having to deal with realities of her own appearance, and the attitudes of the time. I am glad that she was able to find some measure of happiness in her life.

3.0 out of 5 stars George Eliot: A woman of brilliance

These hourly histories/biographies remind me of taking a cruise; one stops at various places in the world and just gets a lick of the flavor of that place. Just enough exposure and color to decide if one wants to make a return extended visit. These books do the same thing. I read just enough about George Eliot to know I want to read more about her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing woman

What an amazing woman - ahead of her time .... and suffered for it.
Some the characters from this glimpse of the Victorian era read like characters from a modern day American soap opera.
Was not too enamored by the brief synopses of several of her novels, but (I guess) they mirrored her personal experiences.
A good wrap of a fascinating individual.

The book was fine, and I guess it fairly represented "George's" life. I have no other way to judge. I wish it would have spent more time on her writing like why "Silas Marner", rather than on her love life... or rather her pursuit of a love.

She was a century ahead of her time. I'm inspired to read her books. Its interesting that although she was in a committed relationship for a quarter century, she couldn't meet the Queen because they weren't married.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible life story

Incredible life story of ups and downs of a English author, but I had never heard of her before reading this book. Although I have heard much about Charles Dickinson but not anything about Eliot, I doubt many people in this country have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise

This is a short introduction to the life of the wonderful George Eliot. While reading it, I had side by side a chronology of the major events in her life which had been prepared by an academic and the short Kindle book is every bit as good. All the major events in her life are covered, somewhat briefly, but with great accuracy. You will not get an in depth background to any of her writings here, but this booklet does provide the context in a concise and clear format. If you want to get learn this context as quickly and comprehensively as possible, you will be able to read this book in under an hour. It does exactly what it says on the cover.
