2.0 out of 5 stars Depressing
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2020
Updated

Originally I DNF at 50% - This was like a depressing country song had an affair with the beginning of a Disney movie. I admit that I haven't seen "It's a Wonderful Life" in several decades... but I don't remember it proportionally being this depressing. This is less than two hours and the *entire* first hour is:

1. Bailey's parents died on Christmas Eve 20 years ago
2. The only company in town is closing down
3. Bailey & her husband (Chris) are infertile
4. Chris's brother is a bum whose wife left him & the kids
4b. They live next door so Bailey gets to see daily how ignored/poor/unloved the kids are
5. Bailey walks in on her best friend & Chris having sex

Despite loving Amy McFadden as a narrator - I couldn't finish.

At the urging of another reviewer that the second half was more cheerful... I finished it. Keep in mind this entire book spans about 24 hours in present day.

Another 25% was the “if you’d never been born” portion and detailing how everything would be even worse.

Then for last 10-15 minutes of the book, Bailey gets organized and decides to move forward. Don’t worry - two men are going to save her. Her soon to be ex will loan her the money to make payroll and the guy she’s just met 12 hours ago (yeah, they knew of each other in high school, but they haven’t seen each other in 20 years) is going to save the cannery and love her forever.

I really don’t relish bad reviews... but this was proportionally way too much negative to feel joy at the unrealistic “heartwarming” of the last 10 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved.

One of the best stories from the season! Not only did this story give just the right nods to the original it left me feeling hopeful, happy and jus thankful. Bailey George is a strong yet feminine character. She is born from tragedy and has taken on everyone’s feelings and halved their heartaches especially her sisters. I loved the scenes of what could have been sometimes you just wish you knew how others feel about you.

I listened to this straight through but wished the story lasted for longer. I hope to see these characters again.

Absolutely beautiful.

I love every story pagan writes and this one is no exception

It’s a wonderful life with stories like this in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the feels

I adore Camille Pagan’s writing. This story is cute, short, festive, and put me in the holiday spirit with all the feels of joy and gratitude. Over the span of 24 hours, a ton of things go wrong for the main character—rock bottom low—but by the end the highs are far greater. Can things turn around that fast in 24 hours in real life? Sure, if you believe in the magic of the holiday season. It’s uplifting and a perfect reminder of the difference every single person makes in the lives of others. Bailey George (love the name) is a character to admire for her resilience and resourcefulness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun re-telling of a classic
Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2020
I love all of Camille Pagán's stories, and Amy McFadden's is one of my favorite narrators. It's a Wonderful Wife was a fun audiobook to wrap up this holiday season with! This modern take on the holiday classic, It's a Wonderful Life, is told from the perspective of Bailey George, a 30-something inheritor of a failing family business who has just discovered her husband in bed with her best friend. With everything erupting and Christmas approaching, Bailey is struggling to find purpose and meaning in her life.

I highly recommend this book about finding joy during the holidays, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

Thank you, Camille Pagan for a free Audible download of your book! I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a Pleasure

I've never been disappointed by a Camille Pagan book, and this one is no exception.

I enjoyed the retelling of It's a Wonderful Life and as always Amy McFadden's narration is spot on. Ms. Pagan has a unique way of weaving emotional drama with humor so you're fully invested in the story from the first paragraph. I was especially excited to see how she incorporated the original story into her own, and I was pleasantly surprise at the originality and the ending brought a smile.

The only complaint? I wanted it to be much, much, longer, to hear more about Nate and Bailey.

Well done, Ms. Pagan. Well done.

It was a great story and the voice/reader fit the book perfectly. I haven't done audiobook before, this has opened my eyes to an entirely new way to take in a great book by one of my favorite authors.
I recommend this book to anyone that's looking for a fun, interesting, quick, eye-opening read.

Cute, short re-telling of It's a Wonderful Life. The ending did fall a little flat for me but it was cute read.
