First, it was wonderful reading about Sean de Lara again. He has always been a favorite character of mine from one of my favorite books, "Lord of Shadows." In addition, he plays a prominent, behind-the-scenes role in several books. But, this is Kevin's book. Kevin de Lara is Sean's younger brother and has also had roles in several books. He is an emotional, sensitive, conflicted character and a far from perfect type to be an "Executioner Knight." Just as the name implies, "Executioner Knights" know no bounds and must be, at times, heartless, ruthless, unquestioning, sometimes law bending in order to complete their tasks in defense of England. They are elite, premiere fighting machines, along with being clever, manipulative, battle tacticians who are fiercely loyal to England and each other. It is always "for the greater good" for them. While Kevin has all the the requisite skills and has been a successful "Executioner Knight" for many years, he has never become hardened to it all, has a conscience and agonizes over every move, mission and life lost. As has been told, he was brought into it all to balance out the "Executioner Knights" so they would not completely slip into the darkness that easily threatens each "Knight" in their horrific missions. However, it has all taken a deep, serious toll on Kevin which you can see in each book in which he appears. This is the book where it all comes to a head.
It was an terrific story, with several characters from the "Executioner Knights" series. We once again get to glimpse a young William de Wolfe (the "Wolfe"). And, oh he was a mischievous devil when he was young! The love story between Kevin and Juliandra is intense and fraught with challenges and conflicts. Juliandra is a wonderful character and is just what Kevin needs. Overall, it was an excellent book!
