If you’ve read the previous books in this series you’ve met both Scarlett and Luke. We know a little about Scarlett and what she’s been through given she’s Presley’s twin, but in this book we get her story and how truly damaged she is. And what does one damaged person do? They find another damaged person thinking they’re the person for them…well we know that’s the case with Jeremiah. But, Luke Rosen, the Sheriff of Clifton Forge, is this beautiful girls salvation and the man that will make her whole again….
“Luke was like a mirror. When I looked into his blue eyes, I was reflected there. I saw the way he saw me.”
Their love story is not an easy one and this book is filled with angst and suspense and there were moments that I really was a little irritated with Ms. Perry because how could she do this to me… I mean I was in tears at one point!!
I loved how Luke loved this girl that doesn’t know true love and what having someone who loves you can change you from the inside out. There’s also the suspense revolving around the Arrowhead Warriors and what Jeremiah told them in relation to Scarlett which is why Luke is now protecting her in his own home. Not only is he protecting her, he’s falling in love with her and the heat they generate is scorching and undeniable….
“I’m doing my best to stay in control here….. Lose control Luke.”
As much was what needs to be done to free Scarlett from those that want her because of what she knows, there’s a moral and ethical ideals in Luke’s way and I love the way Ms. Perry addressed this in this story. It puts into question everything Luke has always believe and how he’s led his life both as a man and an officer of the law.
There’s no lack of action in this book that’s for sure. Seeing everyone coming together to bring justice to their town and the people they love had me gasping at times! Ms. Perry definitely knows how to write scenes that had my heart beating double time! There are also heartbreaking moments where I thought I wouldn’t be able to continue because WHY??????
Ultimately what this book is about is that if trust and love is given and you open your heart to someone that only wants to love you and protect you, there’s a beauty in that love even if it’s not perfect…
“He taught me about love. That real love existed without judgement. Without conditions. Without perfection.”
For me this is my favorite book of this series. I fell in love with Luke and Scarlett and everything they had to fight against to get their HEA. It’s a true testament to Devney Perry’s writing that I can’t get enough of her characters and the worlds that she’s created. They’re rich, vibrant, fraught with tension that is counterbalanced by loves that are grand and life changing!
