5.0 out of 5 starsShould a young mage embrace his shadow or hide from it?

After I downloaded this book, I realized I hadn't read the first five in the series. It turned out that was fine because I was able follow the story within a couple of chapters. The author dropped in fragments of backstory in a way that didn't take away from the action. The story centers around Dariak, a young mage who is the son of a very famous deceased mage. Dariak struggles to carve out his own identity while under the shadow of his father. Things get especially complicated when Dariak's magic unintentionally harms another. Throw in some forbidden young love and a move to mage school, and the book has plenty of conflict and action. I don't read too many books in the mage fantasy genre (I enjoy them, but I normally gravitate to books about fairies and witches, etc.), but I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though I hadn't read others in the series.
