Semi-Spoiler alert...

All good up to the end. Seriously. Guy kills a truck full of captured women with a grenade, and Tav lets him go free.
"Oh yes, we obviously can't kill this man because he's insane. It's wrong to kill the mentally unstable, even if they have military training and access to military grade weapons and explosives, and probably angry at us, and have a propensity for killing innocent civilians despite living with a fair amount of them. It totally wont come back to bite us, or go wrong in any way." If I didn't like the characters in this book, I'd hope this was a fatal mistake, just for the sheer stupidity. I'll still buy the next book, however, in hopes of better choices.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sloppy Writing

This series has gotten sloppy. A loaded truck is suddenly a jeep, then a truck. Breaks for brakes. No character development. Too many bad decisions that we're just supposed to suspend disbelief about. I'm hoping for something with more meat in it next time and with better and perhaps professional? editing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great chapter in one of my favorite Eric Vall series!

Without Law continues to entertain in this entry! Tav and the gang are a little more mobile in this one thanks to the influx of fuel, and there is a new enemy gaining power in the region that they have to look into. Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot even if it was a bit more of a transitional book. There's a fair amount of prepping for the farms, gathering helpers/equipment, and trying to figure out where all the drug addicts are coming from. The banter was really fun as usual, Tara has become my favorite character at this point, which is funny because I didn't really like her too much at the start of the series. I also like that Kimmy has become so important to the group, I'm interested to see how her character develops.

Most of the story is great, there is only one thing that is really frustrating...SPOILERS BELOW

As you may have gathered from reading other reviews, the character Brody is very much disliked by other readers and honestly, I'm no different. Before I continue though, I'd like to say that Eric Vall is one of my favorite authors and I don't really want this part of the review to seem like I'm trying to steer anyone away from this book. I'm absolutely not trying to do that. I've read a bunch of post-apocalyptic books and this series is in my top two. I also feel that if you like the series as a whole, the fact that Brody is a worthless piece of sh*t shouldn't be enough to stop reading the books. Anyways, enough of that. The real reason I'm mentioning Brody is that the way Tav and his team treat the man goes against every other interaction that they have had since the EMP happened. In Brody's case, they KNOW that he has mental issues, intimidates and likely abuses the civilians under his control (not proven yet, but a lot of circumstantial evidence), has delusions of grandeur (telling Tav that everything he can see is his/under his control), and now has murdered a bunch of abused women in cold blood. The only counter argument against killing Brody was that he is likely mentally ill, so it would be wrong. Well, in normal circumstances they would be absolutely right, but with the current times being what they are and the danger that Brody has proven he represents it just doesn't make sense to let him go.

That said, I also feel that when you have a series that goes this long, sometimes as a reader you won't be happy with an author's choices. I can't stand Brody's character, but it seems obvious that it won't end there so we'll see what comes next. Overall, I really enjoyed this one with the exception of the very end, but that certainly won't keep me from the next. On to 12!

I don't like cliffhanger endings. I'm tired of repetitious stuff like Rolly makes the best coffee, Tara is the best cook, and Tav saying 'Thank You' too much. I'm pretty sure they get that he's appreciative by now. Oh yeah, am I the only Old Timer that doesn't like being called an f'n Old Timer? Fix those minor quibbles and Without Law will be back to being worth all 5 stars! Cool, enough bitching, where's the next book?

2.0 out of 5 stars Authors newest chore
Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2020

Honestly this book just brought all the major problems of this series to the surface. Specifically that the MC and his team are inconsistent when it comes to the interactions with other people.

Also I think it's clear the authors enjoyment in writing the series has dropped off after the last arc and its become more of a chore then enjoyable. I think this series will hit a low point for a while until the author either drops the series or finds a new plot line that he's actually excited about. Until then I expect repetitive feeling books with lots of piontless filler.

Eric Vall once again continues to carry this action packed franchise and I'm loving it. The story keeps pace with the previous books and a wrench has officially been thrown into the mix. I cant wait to see what's in store next.

SPOILER
I can't help but disagree with the decision made on Brody. It makes no sense. Just leaving an enemy at your back that now has known mental issues. But we'll see what happens.
