5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and beautifully written

I genuinely enjoyed reading this collection of short stories! Every story was captivating, and although short there is something from each story that sticks with you. Some of the stories here are heartwarming, some are sad, some are shocking, some are thought-provoking.
Some of the stories had vague endings that leave you to draw your own conclusions, but still each one is beautifully written and packed with a raw emotion so that even if the story was about something I had no previous knowledge in or experience with, I was still able to “see” and “feel” what the characters were going through. One in particular that made me smile is “Left to soak.” The ending was sweet.
Hincy has a talent in his ability to use language and imagery to elicit any emotion he’d like from his readers through his writing. I 100% recommend this book. 😊

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful intense read

Stories are intensely poignant, filled with poetic stories that are gripping and flummoxing from the start. Something for everyone, a story for all tastes, Hincy has created a well-crafted patchwork of interesting and touching stories. Like the other readers in the reviews said, some stories leave you with more questions than answers, but the stories themselves are rewarding themselves with their beautiful and sometimes complex voices. Each story has a fresh voice, perspective, and tone, and I found myself skipping around to find the ones that grabbed me first and then going back to read the others. Hincy beautifully describes the sometimes tragic nature of humanity in well crafted and almost poetic ways, “To Helen, it was a broken toe, and it stranded her in a life of mundanity, forcing her to hobble among the hopeful and subsequently hopeless. But mostly it forced her to stand in front of a sink perpetually swimming with dirty dishes, her one's gentle hands dissolving to calluses…”

4.0 out of 5 stars Anecdotes of dark wit and masculinity
Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020

A mark of great writing is the ability of the writer to enwrap the reader in the text—Hincy accomplishes this in select stories in Without Expiration. “Left to Soak,” is a prime example, soliciting visceral pain and anger, then extracting it all in a cathartic release.

Do not think this is a book full of happy endings—on the contrary, many of the anecdotes are dark, even humorously cruel. Throughout, Hincy’s writing is marked with pronounced wit and masculinity, echoes of Southern California traffic, and the distant smell of Old Spice cologne. It is enough to entreat forgiveness for an occasional announcement of ethnicities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving and Thought Provoking Short Stories

The short stories in this book are incredibly moving. I felt like I wasn't alone in my frailty and failings when it comes to relationships. He is able to touch a deep, raw place that makes us all human.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Makes You Think!

While some of the stories leave you with more questions than answers, I liked this format quite a bit. I felt like some of the stories were designed to leave you asking questions in your own mind to make you explore how you really feel about the topic at hand. These stories take some of life's most uncomfortable topics and make us think them out. I would definitely be interested in reading another volume of this nature by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Storyteller
Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020
This short story collection was right up my alley. William Hincy weaves wonderous tales, whether filled with mounting dread or with unabashed laughter. The characters he brings to life are easily relatable. What a bender it is when the twisted happens. When the unimaginable takes place. When the absurd becomes reality. Could these unassuming, everyday people become us? Oh, quite rightly. That is what I ultimately enjoyed about Hincy's writing. He is able to make the obtuse relevant. The outlandish feasible. A trademark of a phenomenal story teller.

'Are we bad people who sometimes do good things, or good people who do bad things?' I think we all are a little bit of both, don't you think?

Thanks to NetGalley, Whiskey-Winged Lit, and William R. Hincy for an ARC in return for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020
This compelling collection of short stories would theoretically be great for reading in multiple sittings, if only the immensely detailed worlds and rounded, relatable characters Hincy creates (and recreates) every few pages weren’t so gripping, emotional, and downright addictive.

Full of beautifully strung words and a variety of thought-provoking themes, Without Expiration is a delightfully rough ride. Every story will prompt a smile at some point, even the most poignant—likely only moments before evoking tears.

The dialogue and relationships are engaging and real. Each story is just the right length. Nothing feels redundant or recycled, presenting consistently fresh journeys.

Highly recommend. I know I’ll enjoy reading some of my favorites again and again. As an LA native, I especially appreciate many of the detailed and nostalgic settings. Good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, Raw, Intellectual, and REAL!
Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2020
This book is full of quick slices of life that drop the reader into the worlds and relationships of lovers, ex-lovers, families, parents, strangers, and everyone in between! Hincy's exquisite details craft complex and deeply compelling characters that reflect humanity as its core: both good, bad, and a mix of both. Whether you're a fan of steamy romance novels or tragic stories of loss, this collection is for you. (One story about a stranger who encounters another stranger in traffic has an incredible arc with a twist at the end that left my jaw dropped!)

The stories are perfect lengths--not too long, not too short, and give just enough to leave you wanting more! It's a guarantee that every reader have several "I've been there" moments. Warning, you will feel the pain and past regrets of these characters!

Certainly one of the better reads lately--since each short story is unrelated to the other, this is especially great for those who want to read a little bit each day or have busy schedules. Overall, Without Expiration's heartbreakingly real characters and scenarios is a perfect read for anyone wanting emotional, intellectual, and tragically beautiful plots.

5.0 out of 5 stars The prose is delicious and can’t help but inspire.

William R. Hincy is a lucky man. He is gifted with the ability to sublimely transpose his frighteningly large imagination skillfully to the page. His insight into the human condition enables Mr. Hincy to take you to the ugliest hole and prettiest hill....but not by the hand; you don’t get an easy ride with this author. He leaves a lot of the driving to you, but once you have mastered his style the allegorical nature of the stories will fascinate.
‘ Without Expiration’ sits as the default read for any author wishing to resolve writers block.
Quote from the anthology - ‘ it’s impossible for a wife to compete when her husbands mistress is himself ‘ ( Bermuda Triangle ). Quote - ‘ Spanning into the distance, tall yellow grasses swayed, each strand rooted in position, stretching out to feel the sensation of movement and the sweet piercing sensation of approaching the moment it will snap ‘ ( Left to soak ). The prose is delicious and can’t help but inspire. Thoroughly recommended.
