Although she knew it was the only thing that could be done so that her and Nicole would no longer have to run, the murder of Marisol Lothlorien was not what Petra had in mind. Forced to kill her in a way that turns her people against her, Petra finds herself between a rock and a hard place when Oberon decides to grant Marisol's request for the New Gargs to be an independent kingdom, but places Petra on the throne. From the beginning, Petra has said that she has no patience for politics and being a queen was never on wish list. She's a fighter and she will continue to fight for her people as needed, but rule them? Especially when many consider her a traitor and a murder.
Before she can be the queen that Oberon expects, she first needs to free her people from Finvarra, Periclase, and Eldon. With the help of new allies, Petra will have to storm the fortress once again and somehow win over the New Gargs before they rebel against her new reign. On top of that, Jasper is tasked with killing Finvarra as he is the only one capable of completing this task and it has to happen before the Tuatha return, and it is said that Petra should be with him when he does it.
My frustration with Maxen grew with this one. He's known Petra his entire life. Before Nicole, he was a potential love interest for her. You would have thought he would have given her the benefit of the doubt or at least felt conflicted about his feelings with the murder of his mother by Petra. Unless I missed something, his mother was warm and fuzzy. She was ambitious and made no excuses for the fact that she planned on marrying him off to further the advancement of her goals. The fact that she was willing to kill the love of his life and their unborn child should have been reason enough for him to give Petra a break, but nope, it took her calling him out that finally opens his eyes to the fact that he was being a complete dick. And I am happy that she finally did. The fact that she didn't voice her side exasperating. Of all of the people that knew her, only Emmaline and her friends stood by Petra, outside of Oliver. And now she gets to face another hurdle with the return of the New Gargs hidden away on the Earthly realm. As usual, quite a few things are going on. I'm not sure how I feel about her given away so much of her rights as queen, but hoping that she ends up with her happily ever after with Jasper at the end.
Waiting on book 5 now.
