At the end of book 2, after having learned her parentage, but deciding it did not matter, and Periclase attacked the fortress with the help of Eldon, Petra stages a coup with the help of the Striggan kingdom at a steep cost. When Marison Lothlorien learned what Petra did, rather than be glad the fortress is again free of rival kingdoms, she sets out to have the twins murdered. Thankfully not all at the fortress blindly follow Marisol so they are able to escape and turn to the one person they never thought they would. Back in Periclase's hand. Princesses to be married off to further a king's agenda. But Jasper has other plans. Having learned that Oberon is being held by the Tuatha and where, he convinces Petra to embark on another journey to free the Seelie High King. It is surely a suicide mission, but without Oberon to help fight Periclase and Finvarra, the Unseelie may actually win the war.
I'm not sure how these books keep taking me by surprise, but just how much betrayal can one person take? Although she left Faerie to persue her own goals in the Earthly realm, Petra is still fiercely loyal to her people and continues to fight for their freedom. To be kept in the dark about her sister, her paternity, her mother's origins, the prophecy, and lord knows what else by the man who raised her and for whom she still considers her father in all ways but blood. To be hunted by the leader of her people for no other reason but ambition, a woman's need to be queen. To be seen as a traitor after everything she has done for the New Gargs. My only angst about the development of the story so far is that aside from her fighting her way through everything, no one really stands up and says "hey, if it wasn't for Petra, all would have been lost". Not Oliver, not Maxen, not even Nicole to Maxen. Only her enemies know how formidable she has been. When she is forced to help Periclase reclaim New Garg, that nearly breaks my heart because you knew that no one was going to give her the benefit of the doubt and that sucks. I can definitely say that after book 2, I already figured things were going to get a lot worse for Petra, before they ever got better, but damn, can the woman catch a break? Thank God she has Jasper, but even he will be outed.
I'm on to book 4 now. I'm really hoping for Petra's sake that things start to get better because her heart is too big to just abandon them to their fate.
