A realistic view of what a post apocalyptic world might look like. It would be hard and good moments few and far between. Even victories would carry a terrible cost.

. China and the US go to war and both sides lose. People roam the wastelands of America. The first is rip off of the Old Man and the Sea with salvage replacing the fish. The second is a kid is working his way back to the West Coast after his adopted father dies. He meets with various factions helping some and killing others. The third has both main characters from the two books trying to rescue the forces in Cheyenne Mountain. Very depressing stories done well.
5.0 out of 5 starsStays with you long after the end.

This is three absolutely amazing novels wrapped into one. This was probably the best book I read in 2019. Don’t pass this one up! “You take everything with you.”
5.0 out of 5 starsI’ve never been more emotionally impacted and drained by a Book

Three books, one after the other, felt like an epic tale of greatness. Sometimes I felt as dry and emotionless as the characters and other times I felt every emotion that the author meant me to feel. The book is filled with horror, loss, discovery, adventure, hope, love, everything...and the end makes it all worth it. Very very few books have left me with tears in my eyes and I’ll always be thankful to Nick Cole for that gift.
There are three main characters in these books, The Old Man, The Boy, and The Grandaughter. The Old Man is from before the bombs fell and has very little hope, but then the Grandaughter is born, The Boy is from after the bombs and doesn't know who he is, but finds hope again after meeting the Old Man. The Grandaughter is hope for the future, and for both the men. Some slow moments are involved, a lot of internal dialogue, and bleakness, and exhaustion, but the lessons learned in the cold wastelands of the former US will stick with the reader for long after the story ends.
Such a good story. Very creative an original. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a book that goes beyond just a story a makes you really think. This book had so many deep and profound thoughts laden throughout it. Please go and catch the big fish =)
2.0 out of 5 starsText version probably much better than the audiobook.

I listen to audiobooks, not so much do I read anymore. This is one I consider better read and not listened to. The voice actor is trying way to hard to have a voice he really wishes he had....but does not.

A refreshingly unique post-apocalyptic saga which develops brilliantly, with characters that speak to you throughout (and after) reading. So many stories in the genre are following a similar structure, but this is a better, more personal tale of struggle and survival. The realism, the humanity, the advice, all of this makes you feel like you’ve seen what a post-civilization could be like, but more importantly you feel like these are people you have met. The stories they tell are each in the voice of one who has really seen this world. I feel lucky to have walked with them for a while.
They are part of my story now, “take everything with you”, and I recommend everyone else pick it up too.
