Speed is a must read book for anyone interested in understanding the strategic impact of technologies who wants to get practical insights on the reality of digital transformation in the enterprise.
I have heard Aleksander speak multiple times at IoT conferences and wanted to read his book because he is rare practitioner and intellectual who holds the secrets of business value creation from data and AI and has the ability to articulate it with real examples. In this book, he brings that approach with many case studies and invited industry experts to share their views on each topic.
Aleksander's approach is to show five key strategic areas which he has smartly organized as a acronym of the book title: Security, Partnership, Emerging Technologies, Economy, Digital Transformation.
Keep this book safe. This is one of those gems that you will go back to again and again and refer back as you navigate the digital economy.
Below are chapters I particularly find useful with a pointer on where to get to in the book:
Ch 2: Partnerships: Partnerships are the key success factors of the digital economy of IoT where different companies big and small need to come together to solve a customer problem. Aleksander takes this one step further and explains the importance of partnerships and how to make it work for your company:a) To create infrastructure for a new product in a new markets) startups can be nimble to adapt the lack of transparency of clear ROI at the start but large companies will struggle with internal resistance so a partnership is a win-win for both.c) This is uniquely Aleksander's nugget of wisdom: All new digital projects come with risk. Partnership gives the enterprise the risk appetite to bear the risk to benefit from the upside. So learn from success and from failures.
Ch.1.2.2 The Internet of Things
This book offers a top down view of high IoT from an expert who has seen the industry evolve and many enterprise attempt many levels of success. Aleksander summarizes how far IoT industry has come and why we are seeing many pilots stuck without scaling. He explains the need for data to be shared across multiple layers of infrastructure owned by different stakeholders which becomes the bottleneck. He says 5G will be the solution for large scale enterprise implementations.
Ch 1.2.3 Artificial Intelligence
This books lists 7 areas where AI solves problems and goes on to explain each one. Again, in typical Aleksander style.
Ch.2.3.4 Disruptive Innovation - revolution or evolution
Beautiful explanation of emerging technology and how to accept the real ROI only when they become mature.
