5.0 out of 5 stars Graphic, Gritty Read With Powerful Message

Wow! The ending really makes this book. It is very graphic and intense, but there is a very positive message to the story of overcoming your circumstances; that you have the power to use your unique gifts to make the crumbling world around you better. It shows how kindness and acceptance can completely change a person’s course and help them find a better way. I love this line at the end: “Being wanted, needed, and loved was the only thing likely to heal her broken soul.” I feel like this is a powerful message that people can take to heart if they’re wondering what they can do to help someone who is struggling.

This book really needs a sequel! Or at least a graphic novel made after it. This would make an awesome comic. Or at the very least, there needs to be some epic fan art of Myrikal and Baby... I can see them so perfectly in my head, it makes me wish I could draw.

Superhero meets post-apocalypse dystopia. A brilliant meshing of genres. I love it because when better to throw in a superhero than when the world is tumbling apart around you?

Myrikal, a teen girl, has crazy superpowers and is being trained by her father to use her abilities to join the family assassin business. But when Myrikal walks away from it all, she uncovers a new evil-- far worse and more powerful than her father. If she chooses to fight the force of evil, she may lose the only true friendship she's ever had.

One of my favorite things about this book was Myrikal herself. She is such a cool protagonist. One of the things I love best about her is that she is this super strong hero being trained to be an assassin and yet she is this big huge bleeding heart softie. There's this Cinderella element about her. She loves animals and always protects children and, even though she's tough, she's also really sweet. I thought it was just an awesome personality mash up, and I thought it broke modern tropes that all the world-saving females are rough and hardened (though they are likable too, it was cool to see something different while still being strong and tough).

There were some really major internal conflicts in the book, and I especially loved how Myrikal had to grapple with choosing to assassinate or walk away. It was an epic midpoint.

The second half of the book wasn't what I was expecting it to be, and I was a bit disappointed that her father didn't become her arch-nemesis. However, you see some really cool scenes of her traveling from one weird town to the next. And it's really intriguing.

If you read this book, you should know the first five chapters may be misleading regarding the story line and rating level of the book. They take place from the perspective of Myrikal's father, who is wicked through and through. The first few chapters are probably R-rated, but I found the rest of the book to be comparable to many dystopic YA books (except one more gritty scene at the very end). And the first few chapters are all backstory. So skip to Myrikal's perspective if the beginning is too much for you to stomach before quitting, and see if you like it.

I loved how fast-paced the story was. Thing after thing kept happening, and there was never a dull moment. It also has a powerful theme about choosing good even when everyone else wants you to choose evil. The book is intense, difficult to put down, and fresh. Even though it's similar to a lot of books I like, the story is completely original

The dystopian world in Myrikal is haunting in its descriptions of devastation and evil in the aftermath of tremendous destruction. The author introduces us to imaginative characters who must develop a new way of life to meet the challenges of the new world. Then, we meet a girl called Myrikal, and the story blasts off.

Myrikal’s unusual abilities and strength are matched by her humanity and hopefulness. She still seeks the good in others and in herself even though the world around her is cruel and harsh. Her journey to make a difference is mesmerizing, as it thrills and frightens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good post-apocolypse style book!

I was a little taken aback by the beginning of the book. I wasn't sure what I expecting but it wasn't what I was reading. However, it didn't take long to really get into the story and find myself unable to put it down. Myrikal is a compelling and interesting character. I was rooting for her to keep the compassion and humanity she had inside. Over all it was a really good book and I'm sure will be reading more from Holli Anderson.
