Wonderful book!!
This book made me realize that children do not think how adults think. We need to talk to them the way that they understand us and our message.

My 2 years old frequently throws tantrums. I applied Aubrey’s one of the advices. I went down to my son’s eye level and said “ You are angry. I see that you threw a Lego. You are a angry because I asked you to clean up and you wanted to play more”. Then manic happened! He stopped screaming and crying. He looked at my eyes and said “Yeah” and he hugged me. Then we cleaned up together! As Aubrey said when children are understood their emotions, they often calm down. There are so many great tips and advices in this book. I feel that I understand my son better and I am a better parents than before.

This book uses easy language and very easy to read. I recommend to everyone!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacks Substance

If you have never read anything on gentle or positive parenting, you may benefit from this book. However, if you have read anything by Janet Lansbury or Alfie Kohn then this will read like a very watered down rehash of basic pointers. If you are interested in a book with more substance on this topic I would highly recommend "No Bad Kids" by Janet Lansbury for practical tips or "Unconditional Parenting" by Alfie Kohn for an understanding of why these parenting methods are important.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't helpful

While this book does explain the developmental challenges of toddlers ie lack of prefrontal cortex development...I did not find it useful. Too much talking it out and guilt on using time outs or punishments. She says "while you can't make him go to sleep you can create a soothing sleeping space and a consistent routine that is more satisfying than the urge to defy you." Ok what else?? I assume parents are already trying that. Anticipate tantrums and let them play out? I will just wait until we are old enough for 123 Magic. Maybe this is more for first time parents vs experienced parents. Not for parents who use the word no. Returned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Parenting Toolbox Must Have!

Toddler Discipline for Every Age and Stage is hands down the best parenting book I’ve read to date. It is a gold mine of information and helpful suggestions for navigating frustrating and tough parenting situations, all while clearly pointing out my toddler’s developmental capability during those situations. This book has given me the tools to diffuse and even stop tantrums before they begin by enabling me to view my toddler’s behavior to certain situations through his eyes and evaluate why the behavior is occurring in the first place. I love that the book is extremely easy to navigate and Aubrey has real life practical suggestions for every type of situation: tantrums, sleeping, toilet learning, mealtimes, non-compliance, etc. Each age section begins with an overview of what that age child is capable of developmentally, along with limitations, before moving onto strategies for age-appropriate disciple and then highlighting common issues parents face during this age. As a parent to a one and three year old in the midst of navigating toddlerhood I highly recommend this book, I’m extremely grateful it now resides in my parenting toolbox!

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and Effective Gentle Parenting Advice

This book is laser-targeted at my needs and is the kind of book I have been waiting for!
There are dozens of gentle discipline books out there, but often they are lengthy and more theoretical than practical. Here, Aubrey Hargis manages to share an approach that is respectful of the child AND the parent in a way that is straightforward and practical. We started applying suggestions Aubrey offered immediately and to great effect.

The format of the book makes it easy to review the section most pertinent to the reader. I love the boxed insights and hands on messages from parents.

I received a review copy of this book but loved it so much I purchased my own copy, as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS NOW!!!!

If you have a toddler, or will have a toddler soon, buy this NOW!

This book is an excellent resource! Aubrey is quick to the point and does not mess around. A parent herself, she knows the struggles parents go through and she encourages us to empathize and see things from our child's point of view. She has a strong understanding of early childhood development and gives you tips and ideas on how to approach different challenging milestones with your child. I started reading it when my son turned 1 year old and the timing was amazing, because shortly after I started to see some tantrums coming. She helped me to see these, not as a bad thing, but as a normal thing that little people do to express the big things they are feeling when they don't really have words yet. Her perspective has helped me stay calm and approach things in a way that I believe is building strong bonds of trust with my child.
This book is organized in chapters by age 1-4 so it is very easy to find what you need and it is a quick read. I find myself going back and reading certain sections more than once. You won't regret buying this book and you may find yourself ordering one for a friend!

This book is easy to use, and gives concise information that perfectly fits my two toddlers. You can flip through and start on whatever section applies to you. This is very beneficial for us busy parents. It also gives short explanations of why children behave the way they do, making us adults understand them more, and thus be able to come from a positive point whenever they do things they do. I love how everything is very practical and easy to apply. I can't wait to try other things mentioned in the book.
