I have recommended this book to young people I know, who are in various stages of transitioning, and their parents. I have one such friend who told their parents "Accept me or lose me." They were ready to take their own life, if they couldn't be accepted as their true self. This book not only helps anyone considering transitioning learn the questions to ask and the realities to consider, but - importantly - it helps parents and friends understand what their loved one may be experiencing and guides them in thoughtful responses. Rainess writes from a place of experience, expertise, empathy and compassion.
Being a parent of a transgender child, I may so say that this book is an excellent resource guide and book of answers for all parents of transitioning teens/young adults. "Real Talk for Teens" is written thoroughly and completely honest, not excluding the hard parts of the gender transitioning process, but rather giving positive annotations on how to face them in the best manner.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works with teens and their families, I can put my stamp of approval on this book as an excellent resource for young people and their friends and families! Seth Rainess provides a comprehensive, sensitive and practical guide for young folks who are transitioning. I have given several copies to clients and keep extra copies in my office. The feedback I have received from clients and their families, is that they appreciate Seth's insight and experience. I would recommend all counselors, therapists and Pediatricians keep a copy on hand as it is a valuable resource!
I am a parent of a young adult ( mid-20's) transwoman. I found this book very helpful for me after my child came out to me and I didn't know much at all about transgender. It has helpful material on all aspects of the transgender journey.
This book is geared toward teens -- but it is really helpful to young adults who are coming out as trans -- as well as parents and loved ones of trans individuals.
I previously bought one book and gave it to my child. I am now buying a second copy for myself !!
I read seths book and so did my transgender son. As a parent I found it very insightful since it helped me understand what my son would be going through in the next 12-18 months. There aren't many books on this topic available right now which cover such a large range of topics. My son also read the book and will use it as reference for the next few years. This is a challenging time and having someone talk about the journey firsthand was a big comfort to me as a mom and my son. I am very grateful to Seth for writing this book.
Both as an educator and parent I have found this book to be an excellent resource, have bought copies for students and expect to buy more. Teens who identify as transgender, especially those needing support and resources, or even those just looking for ways to initiate conversations with their family, will find help in this guide.
