I read all 5 books in the Tree of Ages series. There was enough plot to keep me interested. I enjoyed and became invested in several characters, but I thought the author missed on sharing meaningful back stories, as many felt like drive-by attempts that just provided a glimpse of how these characters got to where they were. Frequently I was disappointed with the careless way characters were portrayed, particularly when a word like 'smirk' is used in conjunction with a character who is compassionate and sweet. More descriptions of characters, their family backgrounds, how they can do what they do, their relationships, and their personal experiences would have been helpful. While the characters were adventuring, it was hit and miss whether there was a comprehensive description of the area they were moving through. Several times characters were just 'cut loose' and some events were given cursory mentions. My one unanswered question is, what happened to Aed's faithful mule?
Bottom line, this is worth a read, but just go along with it because often a 'how can she do that?' moment is never explained.
