I have mixed feelings after reading this book, because although it’s a solid police procedural, I had difficulties with the protagonist, DI Gina Harte. Readers are introduced to Gina as she wakes from a one night stand with a man she’d met via Tinder—her third Tinder hookup. Plus, whilst in bed with her Tinder hookup, she’s thinking about her boss, DCI Chris Briggs, with whom she had a hot affair. At this point, I wanted to award the author 5 eye-rolling emojis here.
Later we learn that Gina was brutalized by her husband and still has residual psychological problems, which affect her judgement at work, affects her anxiety levels, and short-circuits her emotions. What a mess! Should she even work as a detective? I would like Gina to straighten up with help from a psychologist.
3 stars. It was a decent book, and I made it to the end.
