I enjoyed everything about this book. It has action, adventure, and emotional moments in equal measure. In the first book we had the bikers for the main antagonists, but in this book they're not only there, we get to see their leader and just how awful they really are. My favorite parts however, are the moments of quiet interaction between the protagonist and the girls. I also really like Rolly; he's a real good person and is full of many great ideas. All in all, this sequel builds upon book one in all the right ways. I'm just sad that now I have to wait for the next and that 5-stars are all I can give this book.
I like the characters for the most part, although the 4 girls are definitely "harem-bait" each with her own quirk and place in the ground. The MC isn't badly written and the base-building makes sense (on paper at least, I'm not sure this works in the real world.)
So why only 3 stars. The simple issue is the biker gang villains, who come across as a deus ex machina villain rather than an organic one. They aren't just a biker gang, they are so blatantly evil/need to be exterminated that I couldn't feel much enjoyment when they were involved in the plot. I want a plot with a villain that feels proper for the tale. These guys were doing things I was sure would have caused them to be wiped out long before the first book started.
But that's me and I'm a bit of a curmudgeon. Its a good story and a fairly fun read until the third act. If that act had been better, I'd easily have it in the mid/high 4 star range. Its only my feelings toward the enemy in the tale that forces me to bring it down a bit.
5.0 out of 5 starsTwo thumbs up 👍 👍 for Without Law!

This series has to be my favorite of all the books that Eric Vall has written. Well thought out with decent world and character building, the ‘base building’ type of books/series is one of my favorite types, and the author has hit the nail on the head ( twice now with book 2 ), and I look forward to reading more.
Pros: Interesting setting and different post-apocalyptic concept. Written slightly better than the first book.
Cons: Author needs to find more ways to describe characters. On one page I read "the platinum blonde" 3 times. Might need a better editor as well... or even a HS English teacher to give it a once over. Story should be fleshed out a bit better as well.
Not trying to be mean here, just wanting to make some points known.
So fun book like the last. More exploration, by our group, of the trashed world around them. Sex is of course on the table but it doesn't overrun the story. The MC is training his girls to survive and thrive. The over arching plot is not revealed, if there is one. Looking forward to more.
I read the first book but was on the fence. Bought this one, hoping things would improve. However, I feel that this book just moves too slowly. It contains a lot of material that could be cut without adversely affecting the plot. Too, for me at least, it mostly covers survival training and related activity, with little adventure and action. I decided to return this one.
One of the best "fort-building" type stories out there. It started off a little slow, and I was worried it wouldn't live up to the first one, but about 25% of the way in it really begins to pick up, and the ending is Fantastic. Definitely a great sequel. 9.5 out of 10
Awesome book, had a lot of fun reading it. Had some interesting adventures and shows more and more what a world without order could look like. Finished with a blaze of lead and fire. I can't wait to get to the next one.
This volume really picks up from the first one perfectly. The continuing development of the characters is both interesting and enjoyable. The humour and occasional bitchyness is amusing, as is the general interaction between all the characters. Some would argue that the evolution of the characters is too rapid, but in a novel series like this time has to be compressed otherwise too many pages would go by with no real meaning. I enjoy the pacing and tempo of the series. I also like the simple fact that the hero isn't afraid to make big decisions or take the offensive when required, not hampering himself with pre-apocalypse morality outside of his charges. Also interesting to note that there's been absolutely no mention of the what or how of the sudden desolation of the populace. Literally all we know at the moment is modern electronics are fried and most people have vanished. Will be interesting to see if any hints are thrown out in later volumes or if it's deliberately being kept vague.
Roll on volume 3..... and four ..... and, well you get the picture.
6 hours after buying this book I finally put it down, obviously I read the whole book, really can’t wait for the next in the series, not many books keep me awake all night so well done Mr Vall, not written many reviews so if anyone reads this one, don’t wait too long to read book 1 as book 2 is fantastic, must go now as need to think of a good excuse for wanting to sleep all day, misses isn’t going to be happy. PS, book 1 is excellent as well oops
