It bothers me when the protagonist has to become weaker and less intelligent just to cover a badly covered plot device.
The series turns to endless pages of reflection and self doubt. Who wants to read that? A coming of age story does not have to have a happy ending, but it does have to progress. Two pages of instruction would have sufficed.
There is also a tendency to describe all opposition as simple brutality. That's not very entertaining.
There could be cunning, guile, super intelligence, etc.
Bottom line for me: Disappointing and skimmable with no fear of losing plot points.
