In Book IV of the Leaders of Battle series, Mr. Pilling's continues his tremendous re-imagining of the Aurthurian Legend. Very little of the "magical" aspects of this legend impinge on the story (although there is some)--a story of the breakup/break down of Roman Brittania. Internecine battles amongst squabbling chieftains, petty slights, desire for power and the weakness of humans all play a part as well as the ever lurking Cerdic. Artorios is beset on all sides as he sees his world collapsing with his principles changing and coarsening.
Mr Pilling has evolved into one of my favorite authors
