This prelude to Bob Mayer's Green Beret series has everything needed in a great thriller, and then some. History comes alive during the summer of '77 in New York City. From the hunt for Son of Sam to the infamous blackout that paralyzed the city, Mayer's newest offering is definitely one of his best yet.
Will Kane is the main character, but he's also a man with a past and a flawed human, and as such makes a perfect protagonist. As with all of Mayer's novels the background research and details are obvious. This new book will make you believe you are right there with Kane as he fights both his demons and the seedier side of the imperfect world of New York.
The dialogue is superb, the story flows easily, and the action is intense. The story left me wanting more, as Mayer's books always do. Fortunately the next two in the series, "Lawyers, Guns and Money", and "Walk on the Wild Side" are both due out this year. For fans of historical thrillers, this series can't be beat.
