This book is a great read on its own, but the Audiobook version creates a whole new dimension of enjoyment! The authentic British speaker takes you 100 years back in time when America was still a young country and some of the states that Shepherd traveled through were not even 10 years in existence as states, the "highways" were 95% dirt.
Great read for those who have an interest in cross country travel "back in the day". There's a bit of America bashing at first but that grows to an appreciation of our uniqueness later on. If you enjoy learning how folks dealt with road and equipment failures, while on their own in the back country, you'll like following Shepherd's adventure..
If you would like to know what route 66 looked like before it was a number or even a road read Sheperd's story. It will make you appreciate our current road system and the U.S. in general. Sheperd, a young Englishman, provides a unique perspective of Amerians and America during this period and a respect of the Ford car that was just starting to fill the roadways. It will also make you thankful you have a more modern ride since the Henderson had many engine issues throughout the three month ride.
