5.0 out of 5 starsBrilliant, inspiring, thought-provoking account of an amazing life

A brilliant, inspiring, thought-provoking account of an amazing life, full of astonishing experiences in half a dozen countries, and driven by a deep desire to find the Truth (or enlightenment). The author's search culminates in his awakening and the realization that his life is just a dream. Highly recommended.
5.0 out of 5 starsA brave, epic journey to freedom. I loved every word of it!

I loved every word of this wild tale which I read practically in one night while flying from New York to the West Coast. The protagonist is like a brilliant, whirling celestial body, pivoting across a vast universe, the force of whose gravity is barely enough to hold him to its course. Wisdom brings light to the telling of a seemingly chaotic, endless search, a brave, epic journey to freedom that has touched and will touch many lives. And though I was familiar with the last part of the story, still the delicious anticipation of feeling it come, foreshadowed in so many ways, spurred me through all of it, to the end of the search, the revelation of the true destiny of both Eli and Toni, and the legacy that we are all at the feet of. It touches me so deeply. Thank you Eli for this magnificent life!
3.0 out of 5 starsA Catcher in the Rye” meets a real-life “Forrest Gump"

Eli Jaxon-Bear spends much of his life searching for significance. He ultimately finds it. And he invites readers to relive the journey that brought him to what might have been thought an unlikely destination. In An Outlaw Makes It Home: The Awakening of a Spiritual Revolutionary, author Eli Jaxon-Bear frames a memoir modeled by Joseph Campbell’s the hero journey. In so doing, he details, in vivid detail, his experiences with sex, drugs, protest, self-discovery, enlightenment, and more. Note: I was provided a review copy from the publisher.
Man, this was such a disappointing book. Although there was some good stuff in there, such as his activism for civil rights and against Vietnam, the vast bulk of the book goes into excruciating detail about his drug experiences. If you were to just read this book you might be lead to believe that Eli’s message is one of ‘take an umpteen amount of drugs, live a hedonistic lifestyle and you’ll wake up’. Despite going into such detail about his drug experiences, his time with Papalii is given only a few short pages.
