I hadn’t picked a specific book to read for Halloween this year. But The Library (Where Life Checks Out) was on the list of books I wanted to read this year. I thought this would at least have to be a murder mystery and would be at least a little bit scary on that account, so I designated it this year’s Halloween read.
It didn’t do too badly. The book is a straight-up ghost story. The murder mystery aspect is there too. And there is even a little element of romance.
This edition of the book has two stories in it – a prequel novella titled The Depot, and the main story, The Library. The stories are intimately connected, however. It involves the tangled affairs of two families. The elders of the wealthy family are for some reason desperate to keep their sons from marrying the girls from the other family. Some of the women are killed, but it doesn’t prevent children from being born. And it doesn’t prevent the ghosts from needing to protect their descendants from the men who would kill them.
