5.0 out of 5 starsThe series is GREAT!!

I've just finished the Ancient Secret trilogy and look forward to more in this series. What I enjoyed the most was the characters. I became attached to them. Each one has their own unique storyline and I was either rooting for them, or in some cases hoping they would fall off a cliff. And the myths kept me turning the pages.

This book has it all! With it's likeable characters and intriguing plot, this 3rd in a series is a great read! It explains much about alchemy, which has always interested me. I'd love to see a 4th book in this series!!
5.0 out of 5 starsLifelike Illusions Can Be Dangerous
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2019
Ancient Illusions by Joanne Pence takes Michael Rempart to his childhood home and then away from home in a thrilling adventure that brings back characters from Ancient Shadows and Ancient Echoes. Pence takes the reader from Cape Cod to the mountains in Idaho to Japan in a search for answers. With dips into mysticism and belief systems that seem at odds with one another, Ancient Illusions blurs the lines between reality and illusion. The characters are interesting and diverse even the ones who aren't exactly likable. Family dynamics, romance, and beliefs clash as supernatural elements wreak havoc on the world around the characters. As in the other books in this series, living in a lifelike illusion creates a dangerous situation for the world at large and it's up to Rempart to find the answer and protect the world by containing the demons seeking to destroy the world using humanity's intense obsession with immortality to manipulate them. Ancient Illusions offers us a glimpse into the illusions we tell ourselves about our own lives and the world in which we live.
4.0 out of 5 starsNot as good as book 1, better than book 2 - it's 4.5 stars, really...

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
In the third installment of Ancient Secrets we finally meet Michael's father and find out quite a lot about their family secrets.
This time the story takes us to Japan, giving us a chance to learn a few Japanese legends and bits of its culture and heritage. As a background for the story it turns out to be intriguing and more than scary at times. The plot, however, revolves around Michael's relationship with his father and his father's obsession with the philosopher's stone and gaining immortality. And that's a really scary path to follow... It's dark, full of deceit and hatred... The plot is fast, definitely faster than in book two. There's also a new female character, much stronger this time, an equal partner for Michael again, maybe not in scholarly terms, but when it comes to character and decision making. There are still some slower parts which may feel a bit lengthy but these are few and far between, luckily.
As a whole, it's a book that keeps you listen on, again very well interpreted by Tim Paige, who does male voices excellently, doesn't overdo female ones and keeps the tension in narrative parts at the right level:)

5.0 out of 5 starsOne thrill and chill after another!

Joanne Pence has once again penned a page-turner, chock full of suspense, mystery, history, myth, horror and a touch of romance. Her characters come alive on the page--whether you love them or revile them, you can't get enough.
This is an adventure you won't soon forget, as Ms. Pence takes you on a rollercoaster ride from an eerie mansion overlooking the Atlantic, to the rugged wilderness of Idaho, and into mystical realms in Japan. Demons are hiding where you least suspect them… so beware!
There are so many fascinating aspects to this book, so much detailed research, and now I want to learn more about the intricacies of alchemy, Lafcadio Hearn and his ghost stories, the haunted forests of Japan, and so much more.
I loved this book. It's the perfect follow-up to Ms. Pence's Ancient Echoes and Ancient Shadows. Can't wait for Book #4.
