1.0 out of 5 stars Useless pamphlet
Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2019

I wish I had read the negative reviews more closely. This is not a book, it is more like a pamphlet with some information about the Sumerians, without maps, illustrations, listed author(s), page numbers, edition/print information, sources, bibliography, etc. It doesn't have a Library of Congress entry, or any other information that could give a clue of who wrote it. Reading Wikipedia would have been more informative and free. The "book" even lists Wikipedia as the source of the cover photo.

It contains exceedingly dubious statements, such as that the word "legal" comes from the Sumerian "lugal" while in fact comes from the Latin "legalis". Then it bring up the far-fetched possibility that the Sumerians could have been extraterrestrials, presented on pretty much equal footing with any other theory about their origins. This is a completely useless "book".

The Sumerians showed up 5,000 years ago by ship to Mesopotamia from somewhere but no one can say where. They brought writing, a complex language unrelated to any other, wheeled vehicles, bronze ( the smelting of copper & tin), trading, irrigation, the potter’s wheel, farming and the concept of cities and brick buildings, art and musical instruments and musical notations. They were the 1st to recognize that 12 lunar cycles of one month approximately equal one solar year. They invented the game of checkers. Where they came from is still a mystery.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short

It is a quick read with info about leaders and a little about the culture. It seems more questions can be answered if someone would decipher those millions of tablets. I don't know if it is important to think the Sumerians came from somewhere on boats, maybe they did. If someone believes in God, it is not implausible that they came out of nowhere. How are the other cultures in the area known about? That I am not sure of. I think some more pictures of artifacts or examples of the tablets and maps would make this a little more engaging. The figures on the cover are interesting. One looks like he is wearing a mask.

Only takes 2-3 hours to read, great to get an overview of the Sumerians, full of interesting facts that make you say "Wow, fascinating, I didn't know that...!"I like especially reading about them because they were the first settled society in the middle east , coming down from the Tigris/Euphrates rivers and settling in the valley area where they started building settled cities, lasting 4,000 years, coming with a high amount of technology like canals, writing and law. Sorry if I'm making it sound boring, but it really isn't. Even mentions things like Ziggaurauts (what they think the tower of babel may have been) and the Amorites (whom they think Abram came from) .

3.0 out of 5 stars A quick overview of a complex topic

This is a very brief introduction to Sumeria and the Sumerians. It covers all the top-level bases well but provides little detail and often raises more questions than it answers. If you're looking for a capsule history of the topic I'd recommend this book; but if you're expecting a deep dive into what we know and how we know it about the Sumerian people this work will leave you frustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous read, very educational

Excellent book, I loved it! For me, with limited prior knowledge, easy to absorb and very informative. Amazed about these ancient people. Thought provoking information that makes me want to ‘delve into’ this civilization further. Recommend it to anyone with an inquisitive, open mind and an interest in the ancient Middle East. I am amazed that there is so much knowledge and evidence about these people after some 5000 years. (Doubt severely if there will be a thought provoking book about ‘us’ in 7019🤔) I am going to search for museums with Sumerian art and artifacts to ‘crown’ this book. Thank you writer, for ‘sparking’ my brain!

A worthwhile, short read. Could have dealt a bit more on notable Sumerian literature, e.g., the Epic of Gilgamesh, and the connection to the Old Testament.

Thought this would be a time consuming, possibly dry read but it was so well written though concise, and engaging. Hadn't heard of Hourly History before and I now look forward to reading all their books. Many are free, on Kindle Unlimited, and offered at a low price for those they sell. Glad I happened upon this book and site.

To call this a book would be a stretch. It more like a "Coles Notes" of Sumerian History. Not worth the $17 dollars. That could have been used to purchase a more in depth book. One that would have arrived a lot sooner too. This one took a long while.
